Fender 60th Anniversary Precision Bass

I think you'll end up congratulating yourself for pulling the ad. These things are beautiful, IMHO; and I think the Blondes are especially stunning. I usually rotate my basses everyday when I practice (or more accurately, play along with some CD's). I'm liking my sunburst one more every time I play it.

I know this will sound like blasphemy to some of you, but I slapped a set of D'Addario Black Nylon tapewounds on mine, and I think it sounds great. The bass is inherently bright enough to be able to pull off the tapewounds.

Just a quick hello and story.
I've been looking for an Am std P bass to fatten up the herd for a while but every time I borrowed one from my local L&M store, I was left with "what's it got that I don't already have?" feeling. So one by one they all went back to the store. For reference my current basses are:
Fender Am Dlx Jazz 2009 or 10 (I forget which) with black tapes on it
Fender MIM Jazz with SD 1/4 Pounders and a series parallel pot switch with rounds
G&L SB 2 fretless USA with flats
G&L L2K Tribute with flats
So I get a call from said L &M that they got a nice used 60th in and would I like to try it.
So I did. And I really like it. I figured it would be more of the same but it's not the same. It's better but I can't put my finger on why. It just feels great, rivaling only the Am Dlx Jazz for feel. And I always thought I could get the P bass sound from my L2K but this bass has a tonal quality that the tookay can't seem to get. And it's beautiful in it's simplicity but still seems to have a great tonal range from one knob.
Funny, I'd pretty much given up on getting a P but this one changed my mind. It might be a keeper. In blonde.

How are you liking the tapewounds on it Jeff K?

I'm lovin' them. And like you said, the tone knob on these is more responsive to subtle changes than any P I've ever had. I used to have a Blonde that I foolishly sold. I think I slapped some Chromes on as soon as I got it. Then tried some Fender flats, which I think she was wearing when I sold it. They all sounded good, but I find that the Chromes are actually too bright for my tastes until they've been on for about a year. These D'Addario tapewounds seem just perfect to me for this bass. I'll bet they'd look killer on your Blonde. Of course if you prefer rounds, then you probably wouldn't like them.

Congrats. I think you'll like it even more the longer you have it.

My 60th came with flats, not sure which brand and they sound great but at rehearsal last night, I actually was playing with the tone knob all the way counterclockwise for the first time ever for some songs. My Am Dlx Jazz has D'ads black tapes on it and I love them so I may toss set on the 60th too. I only seem to like rounds on my passive MIM Jazz.

Love the bass, only thing I would change is the CNC hole under the pick guard as it has some cool mojo with the guard off as well. Looks like a stack of 6-7 pesos would fit in there nicely. Lol.

I gave up on going without the guard on mine. I don't want to make any permanent mods to the front, even if it is to cover the hole.

I briefly considered drilling it out a hair so I could flush mount a coin in the hole, but I can't bring myself to carve into it.

So the guard stays. And a new set of Chromes last week. The previous set was over a year old when I swapped them to another bass. This time they're staying on the 60th.

Mine hasn't aged very gracefully. I play in a heavy rock band and the 60th has seen dozens of gigs since I got it. The edges are showing it, with some dents and dings and a few worn spots in the finish.

It definitely chips easier than most basses, but that was part of the allure.

Yeah I was using the term gracefully in a very loose sense and I agree with the alluring aspect. I'd like at least one of my basses to look a little worn in but didn't want to buy it like that. The fun is in doing it yourself.
Just threw a set of black chicken head knobs on it for a laugh with the guard back on. Hmm. Actually doesn't look bad at all.
