Fender 60th Anniversary Precision Bass

I don't know quite what to make of Fender's response to Pete. On the one hand, I suppose it could make sense if the bass has been sitting in GC for two and a half years, exposed constantly to fluorescent light. On the other hand, it sounds from Pete's description and photos that the color is too consistent across the back and the front, and even under the pickguard, to be explained this way.
Lobster- I don't buy the fluorescent light explanation. All the black fenders would be purple by now. I am going to dig deeper next week by calling fender.

Funny, I didn't mean to start a movement. Back in my O.P., I was just trying to get some feedback about a bass that had caught my eye. As it turned out, though, the thread brought it to the attention of a lot of folks who hadn't been aware of it. I'd like to know how may of these Fender sold as direct result of this thread. Maybe they should send me a check.
... or better yet, a Fletz signature purple-burst 60th Anniversary Precision!
I bought my second one (after selling my first) as a result of this thread and refusing to unsubscribe from it knowing I'd be back. Rip and Lobster kept me common' back
Nice. If I ever do any mods -- other than straplocks, which I've already done -- this would be it.
I had every intention of buying a garden variety American Standard Precision. While doing research I stumbled upon this thread. Since then I've bought two Anniversary Ps, one in each color. I never did get around to buying an American Standard.
I love the sound and feel of American Precisions in general, but I love having a bass that has a different, yet still factory look. These are unique, they are not likely to make another American Fender that looks like these.
Admittedly, someday if I ever have enough coin saved up, I'd love to have a Lakland 44-51M. It seems to be a very similar beast. I'd like to have one in some somewhat unusual color.

I reached out to Tony Franklin for his insight on the Purple Bass and here's how it went:

I want to ask you a Fender question. I recently bought a Fender 60th Anniversary Precision Bass Guitar Center FSR Burst. I stumbled upon one at a local-ish Guitar Center and picked it up for a great price. I used to have a blonde one that I loved, but in a moment of weakness, I sold it favor of another acquisition. Here it is with the rest of the family (you'll recognize the bass on the far right, I believe): http://www.flickr.com/photos/57107158@N03/11615805073/ . I contacted Fender customer service who confirmed the serial number and that it was in fact one of only 125 Guitar Center FSR burst made but there is no record of a Purple burst anywhere. The customer service guy said it could've faded in the sun or in the flourescent light, but it is an even purple throughout - even under the pickguard. He said I should take it to a local authorized tech for more info. I actually like it and am not complaining. I am just curious.
Do you have any info/thoughts/observations that may shed some light on this seemingly one and only purple burst Fender P-bass? I wonder if it could be from the "thin skin" finish - perhaps the black didn't "take." But, I haven't been able to find anything about black Fender finishes turning purple. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Hey Pete. Thanks for your message. Nice pix! Nice basses. I'm not able to shed any light on the purple burst, other than it could be filed under the "stuff happens" label! My black Firm Fretless has a thick rubbery type finish that you cannot clean... the finish rarely chips, and it turns white when you sweat on it (it turns back to black afterwards!)... It is documented that Fender had issues with their black finishes at that time. Your bass looks cool though!

I'm thinking that your next move, if you want to keep digging for an answer, would be to try to track down someone who is a student/scholar/historian of Fender basses and guitars. Maybe somebody who has written one or more books on the subject? If there is any history of this kind of thing happening in the past, it seems like that's the kind of person who would know.
For my part, I did some Googling using terms like "black paint turns purple" -- thinking maybe this is something known to happen with black paint in other contexts. The only thing I found was a single post to a Jeep forum, in which someone asked whether anyone had had the problem of their black Jeep Wrangler turning purple. But then, in the next sentence, he pointed out that this (fortunately) had NOT actually happened to him, and he gave no explanation as to why he was worried that it might. The only reply to his post was from someone saying that his buddy's vehicle didn't have the problem either.
