Fender 60th Anniversary Precision Bass

These are nice basses for the price, but does anyone else feel, like me, that Fender really blew it when they didn't use the Tele style headstock? I would have jumped on one immediately. It just doesn't do it
for me with the Strat stock. I ended up getting a CIJ '51 reissue just because I like the neck/headstock better, slab body notwithstanding.

I don't think they "blew it", but I'm sure a lot of people would like the old school headstock. I personally don't mind the modern headstock.

Well, sadly I just part traded my anni P on a used custom shop 59 P relic. Loved the anni but playing the 59er more (this is my second, other is strung with flats). Couldn't fault the anni and someone else will be very happy with it, the 59er just fits me better and they don't often turn up used down here.

Hi Mikael! Thanks for letting us know and welcome to the club! I love mine more each day! It's such a unique bass and I don't see myself playing anything else ;)
Hi Andrew, I feel exactly the same, my only complaint is that the "Thin-skinned" finish is a bit on the delicate side. I bought covers for my bass stand as the rubber on the stand will react with the finish and eat into the finish if it's left on the stand for a period of time. Take care.....Mikael

Hey, I'd be interested to know what covers you bought for this purpose. I've just been draping cotton rags over all the contact points on my stand, but that's obviously an inelegant solution.

I don't have any issues with laquer so far. Exactly the same as other nitro finishes. Clean damp cloth cleans everything :)
Just be careful what color that damp cloth is! Anything with an artificial dye (red, blue etc.) WILL bleed into the finish! I speak from experience lol
Only plain white/grey cloth for me from now on

I once wore a tie dye shirt for a gig while playing my white '62 AVRI. The back of the bass was multicolored. The colors were gone after a few more gigs so it was no big deal.

Hi Lobster11, I ordered what is called a "Bass Bra" it's a fuzzy slip on for your guitar stand. I think if you go online and enter"Bass Bra" it should give you price & order info. I think it cost me less than $10. I also wanted to ask you how to join the Sire Bass Club, I bought mine last year in June, and The Sire Home page has my email review posted in their literature on the home page...Thanks, Mikael Wilt
Hi Lobster11, I did some quick research, and if you go to amazon.com and enter"Aria AGBS Guitar Stand Cover, by Aria" that is what I bought, they cost $6.09. I hope this helps you out....Take care Mikael Wilt

Cool, thanks. I just put it on my "wish list" and will include it in my next Amazon order.

Not sure why you were asking me about the Sire Bass club, though. Do you have me confused with someone else?

Lobster11, Sorry about that, the Sire question was for someone else, and i accidently put it in my reply to you...I think the stand cover will be exactly what you need.....Mikael Wilt

All very helpful comments -- thanks! Since reading these I've been doing a little more research on both American Standard and the various Reissue basses, and will of course make sure to get my hands on as many of these as possible for comparison. So far, though, none of these other options look better given my particular tastes and preferences, including natural ash body, maple neck, nitro finish (with, I think, satin finish on back of neck -- can anyone confirm this?), etc. It seems like they put together in this bass the particular combination of features that happen to float my particular boat. The biggest question is whether I'm going to like the neck profile (i.e., of either the 60th bass or the current American Standard) once I get my hands on one.

Anyone else have experience with or thoughts about this bass? Every little bit of info will help....

Hi Lobster 11, I have both models, and I like the "feel & action" of the the 60th anniversary model better than the American Standard. I would like some opinions or thoughts on the following: When I received my 60th Model, the previous owner had switched the the stock pickups to Seymour Duncan Basslines 1/4 lb. pickups, which sound great. In the meantime I purchased a set of "Fender Custom Shop" "Custom'62" precision bass pickups in case I ever wanted to return it to a "Stock" setup. My question is, which pickups would give me the best sound ? The "Custom shop" pickups were considerably more expensive, but that doesn't always mean it's better...I would appreciate any help that anyone can offer in whether to do a switch of pickups...Thanks, Mikael Wilt

Well, I'm perfectly happy with the stock pickups, and have no idea how the Duncans compare. Evidently someone thought the Duncans sounded better, but you might or might not agree.

Personally, I'm a big believer in "if ain't broke, don't fix it," so if I was happy with the sound of the Duncans -- which you seem to -- I'd just leave'em in there. But if you want to know if you'd like the Custom-Shop pups better, there's really only way way to find out.

A few weeks ago I tried one out. Wasn't looking to buy....just looking.

While I thought it was a cool looking bass as well as a great player (a really great player at that) I personally wouldn't spend that much on that particular bass. (But that's just me). If I was looking to spend that much money on a bass I'd get something that I personally would consider to be more versatile, like the American Deluxe P bass. P/J pickup combination and the active electronics with the active/passive switch.

To me, a bass like that would give you a lot more bang for the buck as opposed to the 60th Anniversary for roughly the same price.

But again, that's just my opinion.
id bet they wont be worth the same amount in 20 years

Lobster11, Thanks, I appreciate a different point of view, I think I'll do some research into the specs. of each and see if the values are similar. I think the Volume and tone controls have a excellent responsive sweep which I really like. As you said, "There's really only one way to find out" and somewhere down the line, that's what I'll eventually do...Take care, Mikael Wilt
