They're not seen much overseas, but not all Non-Exports have pickguards. Fender-Japan also produced what they called an Aerodyne Deluxe (AJD) which came in black and Candy Apple Red and had no pickguard. The big difference was they had a flush-mounted output jack instead of a Strat-jack.

No problem! The Fender Aerodyne was my first-ever bass, so I've devoted a lot of time into researching them thoroughly. Like I said…"NERD!"

And I agree, the Dolphin Gray is amazing to look at. I've been tempted to grab once or twice in the past. It's very close to the finish on the first bass I ever wanted to own, which was a dark gray Pewter Metallic color. However, I also have a fondness for dark blue colors, so if I did get an AJB model (pickguard, control plate, etc…), I'd probably go for a US Gunmetal Blue one. I love how the finish shifts from blues to grays to greens depending upon the available light.
The real "Unicorn Bass" that I'd love to get my hands on, but could probably never find, let alone afford, would be the Limited Edition Koa-Topped Aerodyne. That there is a thing of beauty!

I agree. When it comes to gold hardware, too much can take a turn towards tacky. It's great for minimalistic accents, but it has to be done with restraint.
Fortunately, there is a more-accessible bass that looks very close to what such a thing would look like…

Nope. The Export Editions are their own, singular thing. The closest variants are the non-export Deluxe Aerodynes (AJB-D) pictured at the top of this page. Someone would have to do a refinish on one to get something like that. What I wonder is would it have to be re-bound as well or could it be kept intact.
