Personally, I'm excited about this. Sure, there are a few things I'd like to eventually see (matching headstocks), but I understand that fender need to take this a step at a time. Hats off to them for offering this service!

I'd want the pickguard painted to match the body though, Antigua Burst style. And the American Deluxe electronics. And another string.
Not even sure I could get what I want through the custom shop, TBH. May have to just buy the white Am. Deluxe V and find somebody who can and will repaint it for me.

A '55 precision would be cool too, maybe if this thing takes off they will offer another body and neck option.

... We keep our eyes on the forums and all sorts of social media. I’m happy to see you grasp it [...] We’re working on getting everything everyone wants out there; but for something like this it’s easier to slowly put your foot into the pond than it is to jump completely in.
There’s no doubt there will be more options in the future, but for the time being (especially for lefties) the options are much more available than our production models.

Glad they're listening, but its still a business and they are doing it smart. I would love to be able to order a sherwood green or a dakota red precision with a jazz neck someday. I think the 60's era custom colors would go over gangbusters.
As a marketer I totally understand this approach. Let's face it, the new musical instrument business is not as active as it used to be. In fact, the last time I bought a new bass was 2009 (and I've bought a lot of basses in that time). Look at the classifieds here. I can't justify buying a 2013 P-bass for $1,300 at Guitar Center when I can get one a few months old here for $800-900. I can (and did) justify a 15% more than list price to get all the features I want (well, most of them) in the color scheme I want made just for me. It's a smart move, and frankly, they make better profit and have less completed inventory sitting around or being over-produced.
I am one of those crazies who thinks that will come in due time with this. I too, would like to see more colors, but as others have said this is an excellent start. Too bad I just bought a bass and I'm not in the market, as the silverburst looks excellent (I'd want a J with the pearl blocks and gold anodized guard).

The custom shop "builds dreams." If you have the bank roll they will do ANYTHING you want them to. The stuff the Fender CS team has done is pretty crazy. I have seen 24 frets and neck through strats. They did an all acrylic P bass for Garry Gary Beers of INXS. How about the Tye Zamora signature?
