I'd want the pickguard painted to match the body though, Antigua Burst style. And the American Deluxe electronics. And another string. :(

Not even sure I could get what I want through the custom shop, TBH. May have to just buy the white Am. Deluxe V and find somebody who can and will repaint it for me. :help:

Make that fretboard maple with MOP blocks and I am quite tempted to buy... but I just can't see paying $1600 for Fender, new or otherwise.

Entirely reasonable. Fender is a *huge* company (as far as music gear goes) so they no doubt have processes & policies that govern any change to ANYTHING.

If Anyone from Fender or FMIC is reading this, let me suggest: Make this a dealer option so that the net price isn't quite so high (but you pay a premium). This would stimulate sales at the dealer level and put more Fenders out there (which are good goals, right).

And please, Fender, make an option for a five string or a Fender Mexican Experience.

For the prices Fender is asking, I should be able to pick my nut width (any Fender nut width), pick my radius (say a choice of modern or vintage), pick any neck profile in the fender repertoire (d, c, modern c, etc), pick my fret board, and neck finish. Obviously, it's all gonna be cut by CNC....so let the buyer pick his options instead of the few prepackaged options we have to choose from. If you're gonna do a buffet, you need more than beef or chicken. Espc a high dollar one. $1600...no way. I'll spend a few extra bucks and have one custom built for me. Heck, G&L's many neck options waaaayyy out do Fended attempt at a "customizable" guitar.

What do G&Ls go for (custom ordered) - let's just say their JB dressed to the 9s - gotta be well over 1300- no? Never got a quote cause I don't want to waste dealers time.

Yes, but you are not factoring in what Fender knows: Their instruments, if stock from the factor, will hold unusually high value. So let's think of this scenario: This FDE thing lasts... 9 months. They offer this for 9 months and then stop it. Every one of those FDE basses will be, in the context of mass production, unique, and so desirable (meaning valuable). Fender knows this, as should any buyer.

That I agree that it's not worth my money right now is secondary; If I were actually in the market for a decent (if not great) 4 string bass, I'd actually consider this.
