Fender American Performer Precision Bass- thoughts?

Thank you. I have a Geddy Lee and a Fender Player Series Precision bass, and was looking for something in between those two in terms of neck size.
The painted finishes on the fender performer basses are the cheapest chintzyiest things I have ever seen and felt. For $200 more you can get a USA pro with a bombproof case. Heck, the finish jobs on the Mexican fender basses is far better. I have played a fender performer and can say it sounded ok, I do know for a fact they use a cheaper wiring harness and pots than the USA pro or standard models. I just do t get what fender is trying to do here with these basses. Like seriously....just make a P/J USA standard/ pro again. It will sell.

That blue finish in particular is quite possibly the cheapest paint/finish I have ever seen in a bass. My sons squire p bass has a finish better than that. Buy an American pro/standard for $200 more and have a instrument that will at least keep your resale value above $1000 those performers barely sell for $700 used. I’d take a mex with a sanded neck backside anydYp
I have now had chance to play a couple of examples of the J and P versions of these basses, as well as a Mustang, and I have to say I have been disappointed. What gets me is if you play one of these instruments back-to-back with ANY random $500ish Indonesian bass you grab off the wall, you will immediately wonder how you can justify paying more that double the price for the Fender. Do all the good set-up and quality control guys/gals live in Indonesian????
Anyway, as has already been noted, the American Pro seems to be a much better value for a relatively small price jump over the performer.

I tried both American Performer and American Pro. And I took the first one. The J and P picukps are well balanced (far better than the Mex Deluxe I used to play).
No hum or buzz, even the J pickup solo with the greasebucket and the treble on max on my amp.
I don't want to change any part. I only add a string retainer and security straplocks.

Hey I know this post is over a year old, sorry! But I just got the same APP in blue and LOVE IT! I'm curious about the bridge swap. I've used the Hipshot Kickass bridge in new builds before, but never swapped it in place of a bent steel bridge. Can you tell me what you experienced with it in terms of sound, sustain, attack, etc? Did you run into setup issues? Some folks have complained about the saddles "bottoming out" before correct set-up. Did you run in to any of that?
Do you still have the bass? If you do, having had this for over a year now, do you think it was a worthwhile mod?

No worries- glad you like the bass! Yea, I still have it. I didn't have any issues with the Kickass bridge install. My luthier friend did it and all seems fine. I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be a direct replacement for that kind of bridge as long as it is the same screw pattern to mount it.
Anyway, mostly I did it since I already had it on another bass and I swapped their bridges as I felt they would suit each bass better. Here are the two after swapping bridges:
You do realize it's a satin finish? I actually wish Fender would do more satin finishes.
Yea, I think that's lost on some folks who expect all guitars to come covered in 1/8th of hard spray-on plastic.
I LOVE the satin stuff. My favorite guitar is this 2004 Fender Highway 1 Texas Tele with a satin finish. It feels incredible and is the most lively guitar I own. It has aged beautifully and just feels better and better as the years go by. I bought this guitar brand new and still can't believe a Tele is my #1 guitar, lol. Kinda odd for a metalhead's fav fiddle to be a spanky countrycaster, but here it is! It just feels alive and present even when fingerstrumming unplugged.
I chose the American Performer Precision not for the low price point, but BECAUSE of this finish. It very much feels lively and fun before you even turn on the amplifier! If they offered a Pro II in satin I would have done that. Maybe even an Ultra.
