Fender American Professional Series

Rumor has it EMG is working on a new JimmyM signature Precision Bass pickup.
The idea was to replicate the sound JimmyM has been chasing lo these many years.
As a bit of a product teaser they provided me with a screen shot of the EQ settings they used.

This is the precise criticism that I saw leveled against the V-mod by another pundit here on TB, who likewise claimed the pickup has a scooped characteristic intended to be me more appealing to the bedroom players who statistically buy the bulk of these.

I guess the takeaway is if you don't like a pickup, the best response is to cast aspersions on those who do by implying they are relegated to bedroom-player status?

Thanks for stirring the pot, Ross :p

Actually, that was me who said that, I believe :D The reason I say that is because, let's face it, the vast majority of people who buy music gear don't play out. And there's nothing wrong with that. They enable companies to keep those of us who do play out in nice gear, and I appreciate it. But I do think they appreciate scooped tones more often. I didn't think of it as being insulting to those who do play out and like those pickups, but in retrospect, I guess it is. So I apologize and will try to do better in the future.

LOL? Oh Jimmy let us see your rating then it will be well received and scrutinised :smug:
OK, using the TMB scale:

Geezer: 6/6.5/6

62 CS (Mine from the early 2000's, not sure about the newest reissue as I haven't played on it yet): 6/6/6 (ooooh, scary!)

V-Mod: 7/5/6

Scrutinate away!

I didn't mean to correct you. Just observing that "scooper-of-mids" is becoming a catch-all aspersion around TB, akin to calling someone "Commie" on 'Market Watch'! :woot:

As an aside, I have been greatly enjoying old Ampeg threads, but they leave one question still unanswered: Did your wife ever get her horse? Or did you slow your roll on the amp collecting to check her?

No she didn't. Once she priced what stabling and having someone feed a horse would cost, she bailed out of it herself.

I hear you. I like to use a scooped sound sometimes as well, and that's why I've gone back to using a PJ most of the time...so I can add the J in once in a while and scoop the sound. But not so much when I'm using the P by itself. Maybe just a tad of scoop on the amp settings at the most. But there's nothing at all wrong with scooping your tone if that's the sound that works with your music, and that does bug me to hear so much negativity toward it. For some music it works very well.

JimmyM is one of my favorite people on TB.
This has been a long standing joke that I've managed to run into the ground over and over and over again.......ha ha ha.
Thanks for having a sense of humour Jimmy :)

I just got a candy apple red Precision.:D It sounds, feels, and looks great. The only minor issue I have with it is the new tuners. The shafts are tapered so they have a tendency to force the string down as it winds and tightens, causing the string to want to pile up on itself rather than winding with the coils nicely stacked from top to bottom. Also, the new shafts are narrower so if you wanted to take a set of strings off a Professional and put them on a Standard, the strings might be cut a little too short. Has anyone else had this issue?

'62 AVRI used to be my GOAT bass... until I received (and set up properly) my new P-Pro :) But AVRI's still warm up my heart.....

Oops, I meant to post this in the "official fender precision bass club" thread... Sorry to crash your party. But I'll try to return one day soon with a 'Pro in tow. In the meantime, come post your Pro over there, if you haven't done so already!
