Fender Bassman 100T - chapter 2

I also bought a USA 12AT7. Turns out my memory was wrong.. I have 4 6V6's and not 6L6's. That sucks.

Ill try the RCA and the Phillips/Amperex in V1 and in V2 to see which I like better. I see myself using the vintage channel mostly, but not sure when I get a guitar.

I also will get some 6L6's soon. Gotta save up $$

Yeah.
Guitar player with 300 watts?
Nononononono. bad idea.

Even 100 is scary enough.

Loudest guy I ever played with was using an 18 watt Fender Champ clone he built, with 1x10 + 1x12. Ridonkulous loud.

My regular guitarist now uses a 40 watt all tube Traynor single 12 with a tube screamer. He's a seasoned veteran player and gets a great tone at a nice low volume. I use my GB Contour single 15 and it keeps up easily. With the type of FOH support around nowadays you really don't need much.

However back in the days of not so good PA's and lots of outdoor gigs he was using a 100 watt full Marshall stack cranked and I had an Acoustic 370 with two 301's. Now that WAS a killer bass rig :D. Only used FOH for vocals and drums with guitar mic'd just for fill in. Never had to use PA support with the Acoustic rig. Loudest 375 watts ever!

I do jam from time to time with another player who uses a 100 watt Marshall 1/2 stack. I have to add my Focus single 15 cab to the Contour to cover those gigs.

My ears much prefer the 40 watt gigs. LOL

I'm seriously considering when funds permit, selling the Contour and picking up the 100T to use with the Focus 15. That would be a sweet setup and will cover anything I normally play nowadays.

Initial low volume review of the Amperex and the blackplate 12AT7 is unreal! Daughter is asleep in the next room over, so volume had to be low. Warmth and articulation is the two words I'd use to describe the tone. I could play all night right now.. Just to listen to the tone.

What a great amp! Tomorrow night is a rehearsal.. Can not wait!

Also am thinking about GE 6L6GC's or 7581A's to top it off.

My 100-T is still on the repair bench.

Got an interesting call from the guys at BJ Amplifiers here in Brisbane; they'd ordered a replacement bias board - which promptly failed on power-on. They installed the original one again, and it was working. They've ordered another bias board; in the meantime they are going to leave it running with a known good set of tubes and see if they can get it to fail again.

I just laughed and told them to take their time - sounds like they might see more of these, and I'd like to know that there's at least one tech out there that knows what's going on in these amps.

Assuming the side to side wiggle + pull has failed, are the socket bases ceramic? I would be tempted to push a jeweler's flatblade in between and twist. The bottom of the valve is relatively thick glass. Once underway, the wiggle/ pull will finish the job.

Denton, I am very curious..PLease describe the task of taking the 12AT7 out. I have read horror stories of the tight fit..

I have just sold my US Spector bolt-on. This is to fund the 100t. I am super excited...

Thanks for any and all information.

Marc

It took a good 5 minutes before it broke free. The 12ax7's took about 4 seconds. The tube is just way too fat.. no wiggle room and has the gasket thing around it. I flipped the amp upside down and removed a power tube. It finally came out.

The USA blackplate 12AT7 ($17) slid in easily and is skinnier. That GT tube will never go back in this amp!

I stuck the early 60's Amperex in V1 and the 50's RCA blackplate in V2. Will do sound tests today to see which sounds better in V1.

Blew the main fuse this morning.. Switching between 25 and 100 watts, vintage and overdrive on 8ohm tap with single SVT210-AV. A little concerned about that. Luckily, the amp comes with spares.

Before it blew, I noticed something wasn't right and noticed a red and orange light on the two inner tubes. I switched in standby, then back on. Then fuse blew.

Before that, The amp sounded fantastic. I just don't have faith in the GT power tubes will last, honestly. I could be wrong, but..

And I was right. Switched amp back on from sitting in standby for a good 5 min, and a horrible sound came out. I looked at the tubes, and a 4th of July fireworks show was coming from one of the tubes. The GT tube lasted one hour :(

GE's are being ordered.
