Fender Custom Shop Club

Speaking of pickguards, I made mine black:

Hello Jonithen!
Do you want recommendations for stores that can talk with CS (i.e. CS dealers) for placing a custom order?

Precisely! Especially looking for ones people have had good experience with, I know I could get sent somewhere if I just drop in to my local guitar center and ask them but I thought someone here might be able to direct me to someone that will really help on this project.

I used Bizarre Guitar in Reno and went through the process with Sweetwater. The Bizarre Guitar order was pretty quick and painless. They had exactly what I wanted, I was just looking for it in a different color.

Sweetwater was a true custom build. They were great but I ended up not going through with it.

In either case, I would start with either of them. Download Fender's builds sheet and fill it out. Call (not email) and talk with someone about what you want. Get a feel for their willingness to help you out and go from there.

Are you looking for a teambuilt or masterbuilt instrument?

That's important because some features may be at the masterbuilt level only, which costs significantly more than a teambuilt instrument. The dealer should be able to help you keep it within teambuilt specs unless you want a masterbuilt bass.

There are several very good dealers around the US with very fair pricing. I sent you a PM with a few that I've used for custom builds in the past.

So this is my contribution to the club. Granted this baby is only a half-brother to all of yours. None-the-less, she's an amazing player and extremely versatile. I absolutely LOVE the neck profile. Not quite as deep front to back as most Fender Jazz basses I've played and also, the radius feels flatter to me....

So I picked up this beauty a month or so ago. She was damn near perfect, but needed a couple of very minor tweaks.

I enlisted the infamous Kevin Brubaker to do the tweaks and upgrades. Those of you that know Kevin's work, know that it's impeccable (I'm talking perfection).

- The original builder/assembler had the bridge mounted just a hair off. Kevin plugged the old holes and put the bridge in the correct place.

- On the Fender Custom Shop neck, the side markers were pearloid (just like the blocks). It made for a bad experience when playing live on a dark stage. I had Kevin drill them out and replace them with glow-markers.

- No truss route (for access to the truss w/o popping the neck off) was on the body or pickguard. I had Kevin route both and color-match the wood. He gave me a shorty-allen wrench and I can get to the truss with no issue.

- Kevin made sure the frets were level and gave her a complete setup!

Here is some additional info on this bass:

Very light... Maybe 8 lbs.

Neck - 2007 Fender Custom Shop (w factory Fender tuners, made by Schaller I believe). The tuners are even better than current Fender and Hipshots IMHO. Turn soooo smoothly!
Body - USA made - All-Parts
Bridge - Hipshot - Type B
Electronics (pickups/preamp) - EMG (USA), 18 volt - control detail below

Controls are:
Bottom row (starting from the neck):
vol/vol/tone (passive tone control)

Top row (starting from the neck)
Treble/bass/mid&mid frequency sweep stack)

Very balanced and punchy. Lots of tonal options.

The neck is dead-straight, frets level as can be and the action is insanely-low. The neck is very fast and has a slightly-thinner profile, front to back than most jazz necks I've played. It also appears to be quarter-sawn (that's what the grain looks like to me).

She balances great and again, very light. I've had multiple soundmen and bassists from other bands tell me how good it sounds. I'm quite happy! Plus, I'm playing something that NOBODY else is!

So, this is a Frankenbass that happens to have a Custom Shop neck? It's nice, but I don't see it as Fender Custom Shop.

Shameless promotion here, but some of you might be interested...

SWMBO has decided it is time for me to clean out one of my gear closets, some of the basses that I've collected over the last few years must go. Several of these are very nice Fender Custom Shop basses. I wanted to give TalkBass users first chance at these before I list them on Reverb.com next week. Links are below. Please PM me if interested.

Man...one of the best Custom Shop collections I've seen for sure..that Charcoal Frost Postmodern looks fantastic..!

I'll post pictures of some of the keeps later. The charcoal frost is beautiful. I'm actually selling that bass and the PBass Pro as I just spec'd an order of a PBass Pro in Charcoal Frost. I'm planning to make that my #1 bass.
Oh wow..I wasn't even aware that a P Bass Pro could still be team built ...now if THAT ever came up for grabs, I couldn't say no to that...!
