Personally I like using the gaskets out of Grolsch beer bottles. That or rubber gaskets you can find at your local hardware store.

When I need them, I do that too.
However, the leather straps (Italia's) that I use now are so stiff that I have not needed any strap-locks. Installing them is a chore and they are not inclined to fall off. Of course, I also do not do any serious stage-aerobics.

Yes, I have noticed that a few of the newer straps I have are stiff enough that there is no way it's slipping off. However, I still have a few that I rather not chance it.

To all that are discussing this black foam stand/hanger issue on nitro finishes...

Aren't there differences in the foam used by the various manufacturers? I remember researching this 6 or 7 years ago when I bought Hercules guitar hangers for my home office. I wanted to make sure they'd be okay for the nitro finish basses and french polish flamenco guitars.

These are 5 hour gigs with about 15 minute breaks in between 45 minute sets. During the breaks my bass is in its stand which does have the black foam padding, however it’s never been left in direct sunlight.

My '64 got marks too when I used a Link Removed stand; although a very nice design, the headstock and body cushions are softer that they should, and as a result after some usage they break apart, leaving the metallic skeleton to come through - that may damage the wood because of the pressure at the headstock. The material itself didn't leave any color on my bass, just a tiny mark. I then "dressed" the cushion with a white cloth to act as a protective layer between the wood and the skeleton, but again it left a mark on the nitro with the texture pattern of the cloth. So, I ended up buying a Link Removed with translucent support elements - problem solved.

Just installed good anodised guard on my cs59. Wow! What a change. I bought genuine Fender av58 guard, fits perfectly and this newer av58 version has clear coat on top, which makes it very nice to touch (not cold and brushed aluminium feel, someone do not like it).

I don’t know what the differences are when it comes to the foam. A buddy of mine uses Rock Stands floor stands and some other brand wall hangers. The floor stands burned the finish off an AVRI jazz and the wall hangers did the same on the neck of a vintage ibanez. I use a String Swing floor stand that I thought was nitro safe. After buying it, I saw where you could call in and specially order one that uses different padding to protect nitro finishes. I have the pads wrapped in cotton fabric that I bought at Joanne Fabrics to be safe and have never had a problem.

I also use the Sadowsky nitro guards on my single stage stands and have not had an issue either. I guess it really is trial and error.

I also used a strip of cotton cloth on my Fender-brand 5-place rack/stand. Of course, I did not do this until after it had melted the finish off of one of my Highway 1 basses.

I have a Fender CS 59 and I am having trouble keeping the control knobs from falling off. Anyone ever have this problem? No matter how much I tighten them, it’s not long before they slip loose. Any suggestions before changing out the knobs would be greatly appreciated - unless swapping out knobs is the only solution.

What type of shafts do the pots have? If split, make sure the set screw is going into the slot. If solid shaft, and you don't expect to replace the knobs, try a little Elmer's glue. Also make sure the screw or hex screw is not stripped.

It is the solid shaft. I’ll have to wait until later this evening to confirm if the screws are stripped. If they are, I assume new knobs would be needed.

Sometimes the little heads or the allen wrench itself gets stripped. If this is the case, you'll just need to replace the set screw and not the entire knob. I guess the tricky part will be finding the screws.

And finally one sunlight picture. Anyone has an idea, how to relic a pickguard a bit? It is noared one so I dont think it is the same “brushig” procedure like on common anodised guards..

I feel very complete now... my Sadowsky alongside my new fcs p bass!! Got a thing for candy orange basses!! Always been my favorite since my 02’ am dlx!

Both bass under 8lbs....think it’s time to officially get off these forums so I don’t get any more gas!

Last weekend I was in the Nashville area and unexpectedly ended up buying a new Custom Shop closet classic Sean Hurley signature '61 Precision Bass in Charcoal Frost Metallic. Since I was an out-of-state buyer, there was no sales tax involved if the dealer shipped it to me, which was a no-brainer. Plus the shop (Artisan Guitars in Franklin, TN) shipped it for free.

At the time I didn't have a clue who the hell Sean Hurley was. I've only had one other "signature" bass, a Tony Franklin Precision and at the time I didn't know who he was, either. After doing some online research, yes, I figured out who both of them were and it turned out that both those guys were incredibly good players.

Anyway, the bass was perhaps the coolest-looking Precision I had ever seen. I already had eight Precisions and didn't need another one but figured I would sell one of them when I was back home. Which I will.

This is a not-great camera phone picture I took right after I unboxed it after the FedEx truck departed. That is a center-pocket case....I've only seen those used with early-to-mid '50's Stratocaster or Telecaster guitars. Aside from the color which was originally used on 1965-66 Lincolns, I really like the string mute that is easily flipped on and off. I will add a couple close-ups as soon as I can. The closet classic finish is beautifully and subtly weather-checked but there are no dings or scratches anywhere. I am in love.....!
