Fender Custom Shop Club

Hey guys....took the plunge....got myself a CS closet classic postmodern P bass. Love it....sounds as great as my 1970 fender p bass. :) Any idea what pickguards will fit on this? I'd like a good tort for it. The gold looks too new in comparison with the rest of it..and anodized isn't my fav. Cheers

I have tried myself to change the pick guard on these and they are needed as part of the grounding system. When you go to a plastic pick guard you will get a lot of hum. But I have a tort guard from a 64" p bass that will fit if you want to give it a try.

This is a different issue from shielding? My 64 buzzes unless I touch strings or metal. I need to get that done.

I think the gold looks hot. Black and gold make a great color combination. If you decide to keep the guard, they are easy to age.

I took some steel wool and held it around the volume and tone controls. While I had some of the SW touching the guard, I turned the controls back and forth, wearing into the gold of the guard. You can this to taste, and remember a little can go a long way.

I did this near the tug bar and also near the pickup where I rest my thumb. Looks just like how the Custom Shop ages theirs.

Before you do this, place some tape over your pickups, so you do not get any aluminum dust on your pickups. Just enough to cover the magnets will do.

Did your 59 originally have a gold guard? If so, it appears the jack is grounded to the aluminum. In which case your noisy pickups are due to the loss of being grounded.

I'm actually looking at this photo on a large monitor and that crackle in the finish is awesome.

Is the crackle along with, what appears to be, a fairly pristine pg because the finish on a bass left in the closet would still age whereas the pickguard would not since it hasn't been played?

Also, I'm guessing 2TSB was still available in '59 along with 3TSB?

I would guess this is a light relic as opposed to a closet classic finish. It's hard to say as Fender is constantly changing the names of things. The Closet Classic finishes used to be light finish checking only. The term Closet Classic was also a term used for the Time Machine series of relic FCS instruments. graphics1988's bass is a Postmodern Bass a Journeyman Relic. It has the forearm wear which would have been a little more than one would expect on the Time Machine series Closet Classic finish.

FCS calls the Postmodern Bass a Journeyman Relic. All examples on the FCS website show the bass with finish checking, light pitting and dings in some cases to the wood. Nothing as heavy as the forearm wear to the finish as we see in graphic1988's bass.

So what does this all mean? Just more inconsistencies in products. I dont 'say this to take anything away from the FCS. They make great products, IMO. However, it does make it difficult when trying to describe their products such as saying the Journeyman Relic finishes are like the Closet Classic in almost every example you see, and then you find an example with forearm wear.

You are very welcome.
Even better than the COA, you can see the Shop Floor Traveler; it lists all the specs of your bass. Newer CS instruments have it printed in a leather booklet. Otherwise you can email Fender requesting it based on your serial number.
