Fender Decals On Non-Fender Basses

This is a good point.

Companies like Lakland, G&L, and Warwick all prominently display their main company logos on their budget lines of instruments.

Maybe Fender should start doing the same with Squier?

(after all, those Classic Vibe basses are as good - or better - than a lot of "real" Fenders :hiding:)

Neither do SXes, but you can carve the Sadowsky. Same way people carve SXes. Not a big deal really. And some people are just doing it as a tribute to Fender anyhow, so the shape doesn't matter all that much. Remember, nobody here is trying to decieve anyone. If they sell they'll give full disclosure and say this is a Sadowsy, but I put a Fender logo on the headstock.

The above is a Status graphite neck. Cost is Over $500.00 just for the neck. The Status logo was, as you can see, replaced. Not a Sadowsky. Arguably better. IMHO.

I am playing almost exclusively a Squier VM P. We are close to starting gigging, and I am looking at this dilemma. The big gold "Squier" screams toy or amateur...to non-musicians. And even some musicians, still - when I auditioned for my current band, there was an uneasy silence when I pulled the Squier out. What to do ? Sand it off and put a "Fender" logo on it ? Or just rock it as-is and let my playing and sound do the talking ? I really don`t feel like explaining why I don`t have a "real Fender" to drunks between sets. My "real" Fenders will be staying home; I like the Squier better, actually.

I'm playing bass for more decades than I'd like to admit, have owned probably 200 basses, and I'm not familiar with status necks and haven't a clue what a staus logo looks like. If the bass was a sadowky you wouldn't have put a fender logo on it. And you know it.

Oh yeah... and the bass looks sweet. :)

Thinking about putting a fretted neck on my previously mentioned fretless(which has the logo I made).

If I buy a neck from ebay that is a "real" Fender with a "real" Fender logo, and bolt that on, what's the difference?

If you buy a real Fender neck, as opposed to buying a fake Fender decal, there is a distinct difference. By not buying the decal, you are no longer supporting the counterfietor financially.

Again, you making a decal for YOURSELF and with no intention of profitting from the sale of said decal is not the issue. Fender isn't concerned with that & there's nothing anyone can do about it anyways. Now, if you decide to start selling your logo's - that would be illegitimate. Do you see the difference?

C'mon. The difference is it is what it is and you're not going through a lot of effort to misrepresent something and make it look as though it's something that its not. Defend it as much as you like. Ill bet your not changing the logos on any other things you own though.

I think we are in agreement, basically, but I do want to be clear that I have never bought a decal from anyone.

I actually think putting a neck from ebay on the bass would be more deceptive than my current neck, which again, is a fretless rosewood fingerboard with a 53 shaped headstock(anyone shopping for a vintage instrument with even basic knowledge would know that Fender didn't do that...especially in 53).

If I put a genuine badged neck on there, it could pass as a Fender...except to the truly knowledgeable. And if it goes fretted, it will leave the house, so I will put an unmarked Mighty Mite neck on it. I have one of their necks on my P bass (unbadged) and I really like it. I have zero problem playing an unbadged instrument in public. I think it's selling your own value short to freely advertise for a company, unless they are giving you something...or at least supporting a cause you believe in...but that's just me, I guess.

And no, I won't be selling any logo's and understand that is wrong. I also don't see why anyone is actually buying them, when they could make their own, and even alter them some...make it a different color,for example.

Sorry if I'm babbling, I haven't had my required dose of coffee yet.

There are auctions on eBay all of the time for decals...and there are also ads in the TB classifieds all the time for the decals....you can get decals from Fender by providing proof that the instrument you have is a Fender (neck plates, neck stamps, etc)....and you could sell that decal if you wanted....so if Fender wanted to take the fake decals out of the picture, they could. They could require you to send the neck to a Fender center or authorized luthier and only they could put the decals on a certified Fender neck...but they don't.

Again, I'm not misrepresenting anything because it's not "represented" and I've told you exactly what it is. No one else has seen that bass outside of my family and friends.

Changing, no. Removing, maybe.

I've been giving serious thought to removing the logo's from my ATK's, and I probably will remove the logo from my 700.

I think he was referring to me actually making my own logo, with my own software, printer, and water-slide paper.

Indeed, my point, you must strive to stand above others judgements, especially if they are very low Hz ego-laden ones.

So who here can make me my FUNK logo with the big "Fender style" F!? That the manufacturer, and the model is drum roll ..... TATA!!!!!.....

as our own resident uber low end denizen Jauqo helped me score this bass, which he didnt know would fit me like an old familiar pair of boots.

I sure hope the new "dress" is acceptable. While I do not seek the approval of others generally, I hope to post pics soon and get some feedback.

Because as humans, we can only STRIVE for perfection, not achieve it! ;)
