Fender decals on not-really-Fender basses

Because those that do are poseurs. I thought that was cleared up already. Me I'm fine with the Squier brand; its still a Fender product, therefore it is a Fender.
Yup, the guys that like the Squiers are proud of them and leave them that way. It is the clueless who think it needs to be a Fender to be any good who take the logo off.
You know, I wouldn't do it myself, but so long as someone's not doing it to defraud me on a sale, I don't care. If it makes you happy, put "Fender" on there, I just don't care. The busybodies of TB's amateur Fender copyright legal team/poseur-watch might care, but I don't.

OK, so what have we learned so far?
Some people think it's flat-out deceitful and wrong no matter what.
Some people think it's wrong but mostly just pathetic.
Some people think it's OK because it will never be seen in public.
Some people think it's OK when you have no intention of selling it as a Fender.
Some people think it's OK because "real Fender experts" should be able to tell the difference even if the not-really-a-Fender is sold as a Fender.
Some people think it's OK because "Squiers ARE Fenders."
Some people think it's OK because "Fenders aren't that great anyway."
Some people think it's OK when it's MOSTLY a Fender or at least a Fender neck.
Some people think it's OK, period, because it's just a matter of personal taste.
With the possible exception of "mostly a Fender" I don't think there's one reason that's been given that is legitimate. To me, it's at best a poor way to boost your self-esteem and at worst, fraud or potential fraud. On the other hand, there are many people who don't care what I think (the vast majority of the world's population, for example) and will continue to do this to their guitars. I just hope I never buy a bass from any of you. I feel like my question's been answered and I'll probably use my "privileged position" as OP to close this thread.

I did it to one of my basses to stop people asking why my "fender" (parts bass with a mighty mite neck) didn't have a logo
I hate to admit it, but the Fender decal threads might be my favorites for pure entertainment. I don't care about anyone's opinion on the matter, mind you (as I have my own opinion), but it is entertaining.
+1, this is certainly up there with quite a few other "entertaining" threads on TB.
Given what I have read here, I will definitely not be buying a Fender from anyone on TB, or anywhere else, for that matter. Too many bad vibes surrounding the brand. :scowl:
LOL +1. My posts here are for pure entertainment. I actually kind of agree with the OP, but people do what they want with their own instruments, so why get all in a huff about it? The Internet LOL!
I once saw a project guitar with a beautifully done "Fraudster" decal. Wish I could find a picture.
I've got a FrankenBass. It's a '66 Jazz that had a busted neck when i bought it, so I ordered up a Fender neck in '89 direct from Fender, & they wouldn't send me a decal, of course. I could see why.
But I knew that both the body & the neck were genuine Fender (put the reverse tuning keys on the new neck, & it still ****s with me -- I turn them the wrong way all the time) and so was all the hardware, so I tracked down a bootleg 60's era sticker.
It's not for sale & never will be, so I don't feel too bad about it. I don't think I'd put a Fender logo on a bass that wasn't a Fender.

First of all , who cares what someone else does as long as it's their thing kept to themselves ?? I bought an Epiphone EB-3 for a student of mine , he quit so I was stuck with it . I started taking it to work with me because it was only an Epi , who cares what happens to it . Eventually it grew a HipShot bridge and Gibson tuners and a Dimarzio pu and was refinished and now winds up in my lap at night but the Epiphone logo on the headstock bothered me so much I painted over it and put on a Fender decal as a joke and as I said it sits on my lap while four pretty expensive basses stay cased up . It is the best sounded Fender ever .
Amen. I don't know why so many people around here seem to think they have a say in what other people do with their basses.
Mark me down on that list as "It's nobody's business but the owner of the bass."
