What about the people who've been copying Fender bodies, necks, pickups, knobs, pickguards, etc for decades? Same thing without the name. There're tons of aftermarket stuff with Chevrolet or F F F Fo... written on it.

Believe it or not, Leo did not copyright/patent the body shape of the P-bass or the Jazz bass. :cool:

F a REAL Fender, if I wanted one I'd buy one, but as long as they have Fender necks I won't. I plainly stated that I wasn't trying to pass it off as a Fender, and if I was I'd have used a fake Fender neck. I'm not trying to fool anybody, "and in the end" if it was a REAL Fender it wouldn't be here. I hope you understood that, if not read it again.

I think you are right about that! :cool:

I wish we all were more focused on "where we are going" instead of "what we are driving." Don't you? :D

That said, I understand anyone's desire to have the bass they want, despite all the patents pending, authorized decals, etc.

Appearance matters to everyone, even stalwart idealistic bassists. Anyone who claims otherwise is either forgetting how they became who they are, or they have such a purist visual ideal that they are not listening enough to their own instrument. :ninja:

Yeah, OK, I was never beautiful, nor one bit a star...and I admit a great instrument is REALLY inspiring. Yet, IMHO, you can learn almost everything on a very humble instrument. It's you, not the bass....OK? enough. :D

I used to be one who thought only a weenie would put a Fender decal on a fake Fender bass or guitar, but that was before I read some books and my conscious expanded. Having said that, I'll try to explain once more.

I like the way Fenders look, and I like the way Fenders sound.

I don't like Fender bass necks, never have and probably never will.

I don't get you guys. There's so much stuff "'51 Fender P incorrect" with the Ibby neck there's no way anyone would use one to try to fool people. Two or three extra frets, rosewood 'board, wrong finish, wrong tuning pegs in the wrong size holes, wrong profile, "MADE IN INDONESIA" stamped on the back of the headstock to name a few clues.

I did it that way because BrandX sells decals in pairs. I have a 'fake '51 P project bass (another Ibby TR Series neck with maple 'board) and got the decal for that, and figured I'd practice on the SX because I swapped necks on it and had an extra decal. I'll end up with three 34" scale basses, all with Ibby TR Series necks because I like them. Two of these headstocks will resemble '51 P's, and the third will stay stock (except for tuners) and stay on the original body (different pickups).

I anyone doesn't like it, I don't care. It's not like I put a 427 L-88 air cleaner decal on a 396 from an old dump truck. Get over it.

Y'know, instead of tarting up your Squier(I was gonna say polishing a turd, but those VM's are nice...turds) why not poke some fun at the whole fake decal thing? Get one that reads "Faker" or "Blender" in the same style as the Fender logo. Or better yet, slap a '70's stlye Greco, Electra or Ibanez logo on it. Nothing says "I get it!" like a good inside joke.


Then play the bejeezus out of it.

What did Socrates say/do about the law? (skip this question if it is boring).

How does avoiding ripping off Fender make any of us less able to deal with "real moral" dilemmas? I don't think it does that. All IMHO.

Really, I am not putting you down.

After all, you are right, decals are just, well, decals. However, wanting not to rip off Fender, and also doing good works are not mutally exclusive. Correct me here if I am missing something. :D

No, you're not missing anything, Jim. And I agree - -I think you make a good larger point. It's just that so much debate around here lately with companies like Behringer, SX, Douglas, now this...Fender decals...it seems so beside the point, about playing bass, getting better, making music that isn't embarassing. I don't know, maybe I'm just a little burned-out. I'm equivocal on the issue right now, I guess.

well Jim, all im saying, is that your statements are slightly broad.

im a bassist that plays fenders, not production, all are franken basses.

i have two, a Jazz and a Precision.

the necks are not fender, yet i have applied fender Decals to both.

the quoted statement is just rather closed minded,
your almost saying that if you play fake fenders, your a fake bass player, and that in the time you spent applying the decal you could be practicing.

Jim, my two basses sleep in bed with me, and my life is devoted to them, i carry the jazz to class with me every day, in highschool.

are you telling me that i have a fake relationship with this bass?

and theres no way in a million years would i sell either of these, so you dont have to worry about me ripping anyone off.

Why do you want a 'Fender' decal for a non-Fender Squier bass? Are you going to remove the Fender decal before you sell to someone who can't tell the differance? Not a 'swell' idea at all. .. :smug:

What is wrong with the idea of just leaving well-enough-alone and live with the Squier decal.. I mean thats what it is.

..So you're putting the decal on because you like the "look" of the Fender cursive logo? Not because you want people to think its a Fender?

If you were to resell this- most buyers wouldn't know about half the points you mentioned there- and might not even notice the other half.

Would you remove the decal if you sold it?
