Fender Frankensteins

What relatively cheap basses have Fender sized neck pockets? I bought a fretless Warmoth neck from the classifieds that I was planning on putting on my franken PJ, but I want to explore other options. I played a Squier VM 70s jazz yesterday and was very imressed, but I'm wondering what else I could do.

I've seen a lot of Fenderbirds around. Do Epi tbird bodies easily accept Fenderish necks?

No, Epi bodies won't take a fender neck without doing some mods. If you want cheap, search for a Squier body (try The Stratosphere on ebay) or an unfinished body (warmoth, all parts, etc) and finish it at home with an oil finish.

Yah, the whole adding pickups and doing electronic work and finish work thing is beyond me. I think I may go with the Squier 70s VM jazz body but it's harding finding one with nice and well-matched wood grain.

We all start from not knowing anything about modding a bass. Really the best way to learn is by tinkering, and on a cheap bass is a great opportunity. P bass electronics are really simple (and I have absolutely no background in electronics), but you can also order a pre wired kit from Best Bass Gear, then all you need to do is solder on the pickups.

I haven't done my own finish before, but using something like Tung Oil sounds pretty basic, and if you want a natural finish might be a great option. Do some searches and you'll find some details on what to do.

sure!!! the story is:
someone beat the body into oblivion...... sanded, stained, scratched and abused!! I rescued the body and i attached a 1971 Fender neck "B"width!!
the pups are virgin 1969....the same goes for the harness!! they sound AWESOME!!
the pick guard is a piece of broken junk that came with the crud and dirt on it!! the scrap piece was perfect..... all the screw holes were there!!
i completed it with a pair of old Musicmaster knobs to help deliver the "Dirt"
she's a dirty, filthy Girl!! Tone of the Gods!! the body is light as a feather!!! the nut is a piece of hand carved bone!!
