If it hadn't been such a pristine, great looking jazz bass. other people would have made that comment too- but THAT is a great looking jazz.

Unfortunately, I don't play full scales, and not a fretless guy. Working on getting Fender Japan to make me a medium scaler with frets.

If you're into the 30-32" scale thing (I know I am), Callowhill is making great Fender-ish 32" now. Even 5 stringers! Very, very good.

Thanks for the tip! Much appreciated. I looked at the site. Already have eight medium scale Fenders, seven are solid bodies - so I am good in that respect.

Reanimating this thread. Does anyone have recent recordings they've done with their Fender P Fretless? I am considering taking mine into the studio next week, but it's been over 20 years since I recorded with it, and I'm not sure if my intonation is good enough or whether I'm obsessing (those clip on tuners are a blessing and a curse!).

Reanimating this thread. Does anyone have recent recordings they've done with their Fender P Fretless? I am considering taking mine into the studio next week, but it's been over 20 years since I recorded with it, and I'm not sure if my intonation is good enough or whether I'm obsessing (those clip on tuners are a blessing and a curse!).

No recording but I want to mention that I've just tried Labella low tension flats on another bass with fretless rosewood fingerboard and I find them easier to intonate with I think due to how smooth they are. I'm actually surprised how much I like the feel.

I have TIs on a fretless P and feel and intonation are surprisingly better with the LTFs. The TI's are almost rough in comparison. I think the LTFs smoothness and hardness have a similar affect as a coated FB when you use rounds on it. At least one surface needs to be super hard and smooth.

The tone of the LTFs is interesting as well. I'm thinking it is mostly a classic old school sound but with plenty of high end. The TIs have, I think, more interesting harmonics.

Anyway, the LTF's may help with the intonation. I would try it unless its potentially an experiment at great cost.

I have recordings, but not with my '67P. I don't see how other FL recordings can be an accurate gauge for your needs.
Seems to me, your best bet is to spend time in the shed, and see what happens when you get in the studio.
