Fender Fullerton Reissue club

If the neck is healthy, including no ski-slope on the highest area of the fingerboard, then there is no reason it can’t be made perfect, provided you are open to fret leveling, provided there is plenty of fret left to do so. Then, a thoughtful and patient setup. Find a great and well known luthier in your area. The color is fantastic, so I would invest the little extra to do this work. Perhaps the seller will kick back 200 gbp to help get it done. Good luck.

Thks for the reply and good advice. The neck is healthy and straight. The buzzing is with medium/low action only adding to the sound in a good way I think. But good to know it could be fixed if I wanted to.

So I bought this beauty the other day. I've been looking for a 50's reissue P-bass with maple neck for a while and this showed up. It's from 83. It's been played a LOT but everything is original and working. I have 14 days to try it out. It feels and sounds pretty amazing.

The only thing is it has some slight buzz a few places (A string above 15th fret G string 4th fret. Nothing that interferes with the tone through an amp and it’s only if you dig in a little. i've had it checked two different places and they say the neck is straight and don't suffer any issues. It's set up with what i would say medium action. I dont think it can go lower without the buzzing becoming an issue. I guess it could benefit from som light fret work. I paid what would be similliar to 2800GBP. Would you keep it if it was you. Saying you love the feel and sound of the bass? I dont know if it's me overfocusing on it and becoming in doubt because I have the possibility to return it.. Do you have perfect playing basses with super low action and no issues at all?
My Fullerton 62 P also needed some fret leveling by a pro to get it to play with really low action and no buzzing issues. As long as the truss rod works and the neck isn’t warped, fret problems can be fixed. Definitely a keeper. Nice bass.

If there is fret enough left for a levelling later on I'm gonna keep it :) Thanks for the replys. What a great forum thread this is :)

For those interested I have a JV Squier 62RI from Japan also am 83. It's a pound heavier than the fullerton. the body is thicker and it's kind of neckheavy in comparison.
Necks:
The Nut width on the Fullerton is 45mm and the neck is a very nice feeling C shape. Frets on the fullerton are bigger
The JV also has a nice neck but it's more flat like a D shape. It's 44,5mm
The JV is also with rosewood fretboard which makes them kind of incomparable

I paid 400gbp for the JV. But the devil is in the detail and so is the magic ;)

Ive been playing the crap out of it the last week and I definitely feel the difference in my left hand. It demands more from you, but man do you get the reward. I used to play the upright and love an instrument where you need a bit of effort. It complements my playing

With the Fullerton I now understand what people mean with a lively bass that wants to be played. My JV seems dead in comparison. It's the first bass that sounds good plugged directly into to my soundcard no amp or sims needed

How thick are the necks on these Fullerton reissues w/rosewood fretboard? Is it consistent across all models or are there variations in thickness? I’m trying to read and learn more about them… if any of you have the 1st & 12th frets measurements, that would really help. I guess we each have different opinions when it comes to slim/thick necks. Tks

I'll try to measure my p bass later.

When measuring, do I include the fret height or just to the fretboard? Are you targeting a P or J?

Btw, thanks for this request! I now get to try out my new digital caliper that I purchased recently but really didn't need. :D I have a 1983 Vintage Reissue '62 Precision I'll measure for you. If you'd like, I also have two (2005-2010) AVRI P basses I can measure for you to compare. I also have a 2007 AVRI Jazz I can measure if it helps for Jazz comparison. I'm gonna get my money's worth with that caliper purchase!

Here’s a maple 57RI from 83.

Haha love it! Thanks man. Please don’t include the fret height. Looking for a P bass.

I own alleged 1983 '57 reissue but there are no dates anywhere and the pot #'s are soldered over. If one knew what they were doing could the solder be removed to reveal the date code?

I wouldn't remove the solder. There are other visuals that point to the Fullerton reissue basses like attributes of the neck, body, and the paint. Feel free to post photos here and the TB sleuths will provide feedback!

My 57 RI has a very wide but thin neck -45mm at the nut. And is a soft v shape.
Compared to the baseballbat on my friends 72 p-bass, it's in another league. Knowing that his bass is about double the price of mine is kind of absurd to think about. Just confirming to me why these instruments are so sought after today. Hard to get a better vintage instrument for the money.

My JV 62 RI also from 83 has a D-shaped neck. Narrower at the nut but also pretty thin.

Hello. I own a 57RI which I was told was an 83 when I bought it 17ish years ago.
Hi Jeff,
your bass looks like an early Corona Model.
The placement of the Fender decal and the serial number are indicators.
The body is probably a leftover, later ones haven't the deep contours.
You can check if the pickup bobbins are grey (Fullerton) or black (Corona).
Nice bass.
Greetings

Btw, does anyone know if the lacquer is the same(nitros) on the body and back of the neck on these RI's?

And does anyone have a good cleaning solution besides Naphta. My bass is really dirty and want to clean it.(I don't think it has ever been cleaned)
The backside of the neck is pretty worn, and just tried a light rub down with a fiber cloth on a small area which seems to be enough for the lacquer to want to come off with the dirt. Any suggestions. I will post some picks later.

Here's my December 1982 '57 Reissue. It's a V0048xx number and someone a while back shaved the neck to 1 1/2" at the nut. Did a decent job. I don't like the strings that are on it and was hoping for some flatwound recommendations. What do you all use on yours?

TI flats. I've tried a bunch of others, but the TIs are my favorite.
