Fender is making a P with a J neck

This may be old news to some (or most) of you guys, but I ran into a fender rep at L&M and he was talking to sales manager about product placement, etc as I was playing an Am Std P in the bass section of the store.
As I was getting ready to leave, he pulled a brand new bass out of the box. It was a P with a Geddy neck that fender has put out. He let be play around on it and said it was a limited run only selling at L&M. I don't know if there's an American equivalent to L&M that sells them as well, but they are really nice basses.
I believe they are MIM, and they retail in Canada for around a $1000. Anyone else ever seen one of these animals around?

The P with a blocked neck is not common and you used to have to get a MIJ for that. That'd be quite a nice looking bass.

However, there have been quite alot of MIM P-s sold with unblocked J necks If I remember. I think it was called the "Special".

Jazz neck on this one, too...and for $799.99 the price is right, especially if you use a GC 15%-off coupon.

They're really not more expensive. Your basic Mexican "standard" P or J bass is still $600, same as it's been for some time now (actually $510 at MF with the 15% off coupon good through Nov. 11).

The Mexican plant has begun to make active, deluxe, special, etc., basses with extra bells and whistles and charging accordingly. The old standbys are still the same price.

I still say those basic MIM's are the best possible first bass for a beginner. You can buy 'em used all day long with a gig bag or HSC for $250-$300 and sell 'em for $250-$300 when you decide to upgrade. I found a nice white one with a single ding, tort PG, and deluxe gig bag for $225 on CL so if you are patient you can do even better.

To be fair, they have gone up in price. They've seen a 40% increase in price since I bought mine in the 90's. Part of it is inflation. Part of it is that Fender has been pretty clearly pushing MIM up in price (and quality to be fair) to fill the gap left by the MIJ and MIK models that are disappearing.

At the same time it's pushing the upper level Squire models up to roughly the same general price point that the MIM's used too occupy. The best Squire's are only about a hundred less than the MIM's used to be.

The upshot is that the instruments are better across the board. You pay a bit more, but adjusted for inflation, you're probably getting a better instrument for your $.

I have one as well, would have been a special order but it was an option in the 70s.

They had a 70s P bass a while back (thread talking about launch in 2011) that used a B&B neck, but I guess it was discontinued. Shows up at "unavailable" at MF. Does this L&M special version have a jazz nut width? That would be nice. Pretty sure the 70s P used a standard P width.
