Fender Jazz '62 AV RI club

Yeah the funny thing is I recently moved over to pressurewound strings for the fretless! But I still love flats on the J-bass. Got a set of TI's in a trade and really like them on the '62 RI J. My first set of TI's. Was using LaBellas and decided to go with lower tension.

I have a 1998 RI J Bass (AM) stacked knob Sunburst which is NOW the best Fender I've played to date.

I bought it new in 1998 but the neck turned out to be a real dog. Initially it would adjust straight but always returned to excessive relief....to the extent of being able to fit my little finger under the E string at the 12th fret :crying:

It was put away for about 5 years before I contacted Fender. They sent me a brand new highly flamed neck with dead level frets. I put on a set of D'Addario "Slowound" strings which are still on it. This was back in 2003. The relief changes a tad through the seasons but not enough to justify any adjustment of the trussrod :smug:

The action is low with no fret buzz. About 2/32" between the string and the 12th fret (play position).

The neck was absolutely free. It was also out of warranty. They had Fender Australia fit it for me. I wasn't charged any fees what so ever! I'd heard horror stories about their customer service. I know the CEO became involved (I believe he's since passed away). I think they left all the inter-company emails in the case by mistake. It made interserting reading. They had even offered to send me a temporary neck in the meantime before I got the final neck. I was very impressed to say the least. My initial email wasn't rude or demanding. I had merely asked fo assistance and was blown away by the follow up :bassist:

Very impressive story! I didn't even think to call Fender due to assumption that they would not be responsive. My neck has worked out ok with a fret leveling, but result was that the frets are now too low to do another leveling. Next would be re-planing the fretboard due to its imperfections and then re-fretting I guess? Would be much better and simpler to just get a whole new neck for free!

Don't know why, but Fender had the "offset contour.." decal in the traditional location from 1982 to about 86 then switched the location to out past the G tuner post till about 94 or so then switched back to the original location where it still is today.....my 1990 has the end of the headstock version.

Here's a photo of my 2010 Fender AV 62 RI Jazz Bass. I replaced the tortoise pickguard that came on it, with an Allparts tortoise which to me, looks more like original tortoise. After playing bass for 34 years, this has been my favorite and most pleasurable bass to play. Behind the bass is my Acoustic Control 126 combo with a single 15 and a 220 head replacing the original 126. This thing really rocks!

Sweet! I like mine more than ever now that I modded a truss rod notch for truss adjustments without removing the neck. Still my most fussy bass, but very manageable. Gigged all 3 if my basses this weekend. Still very much in live with the '62 RI tone. Truly unique. Pic of the mod:

Shrimpflea, does the neck on yours require a lot of adjustments? And ate there any issues with fretboard irregularity that result in problematic fret leveling? Curious since our basses are close in age and I heard that the 90's were not great years for our model. I still love mine, but I'm curious if others have similar problems..

It looks like the link to my original picture is broken, so here's another one:

Since this picture was taken, the neck on mine kept getting squirrelier, to the point where truss rod adjustments wouldn't straighten it out anymore. So, this bass currently has a Warmoth neck on it. It feels different but not drastically so---the Warmoth is a bit beefier. Some day I'm going to have somebody take a look at the old neck to see if its problem is something that could be fixed or not.

I've read about heat treatments to straighten necks, perhaps someone in the luthier section could recommend a shop for you to consider.
