Hello fellow TB'ers, I found an American Fender Jazz bass in seafoam green with a maple neck and a hardshell case at a local music store on consignment. The owner is asking $930. The neck has a few nicks in it and the back of the body has some superficial scratches on the back. It looks good overall though and plays good. I was just wondering if y'all think this a good deal to jump on or no? Thanks in advance

If your are in the market for a bass in this price range, i would compare it to what else is available in the price range.
Also it is consignment, consider offering what you are willing to pay if the asking price is out of line.

Yeah go for it, that's an odd colour though for a standard. Make sure you find out the year and whether or not its a refin! Otherwise if you like it go for it!

+1 - definitely. MY criteria is: Does it play good, does it sound good, does it feel good, does it look good, is the price good. Neck nicks and seafoam green would kill it for me at anywhere near that price. It's your $$$, however, and it's only your thoughts that really matter. *I* would suggest to take your time and look around. Remember: There IS such a thing as negotiation
@SlingBass4, the condition is a big factor for me, that why I question the price but it does play and sound good. I'm just shopping for now. I haven't bought a bass in like 5-6 years and I haven't kept up with the market so call this research
You don't remember if the fretboard was blocked and if it had a P/J pickup config?
seems really high to me. if you are in the market have you thought about looking through the classifides here on TB? like ebay we have a rating system so you can see the good sellers. lots of fenders pop up and a lot of us tend to take very good care of our gear. ive had very good luck buying from other TB'ers. just my 2 cents of course.
@hover, I don't believe it had blocked frets, not sure, and the pick up configuration was definitely jazz. In all honesty, I wasn't sure what a p/j configuration looked like. I had to look it up but now I can definitely say it's jazz pickups.
@I am Soma, I did see a 66' Fender jazz on here that looked promising and I like that one too. It's MIJ and the price is $875. I thought that seemed a bit high for a MIJ, judging by my research.
oh you def have to weed out whos asking too much both on TB and at stores/websites. i would def recomend not rushing into things. ive paid for a bass only to find it 200+ cheaper the next day if i would have just been patient. virtual vs hands on have their pros and cons. just make sure to do your research and like someone said above dont feel bad for making an offer less than what they are asking
also feel free to make a thread just like this to get opinions. btw im an american fender guy but MIJ make some sweet basses too
I'll definitely keep researching but the general consensus seems to be the price is a bit high. Maybe I'll take a run up to the store on Friday and check if it's there again. I'm sorry I don't have more details or had the foresight to take pictures.
Hi. Depends upon what the market is like in your area (good ol supply and demand). If you are in a major market (like LA, SF, Chicago, etc.) where there is fair amount of supply, then that price is little high. If you are in a smaller market, with less supply, then prices may be higher since not as many to choose from, not as much competition, etc.
Good place to get a pulse for prices in your local area is Craigslist. However, check the ads over a period of weeks since you can get odd fluctuations. Prices on TB are also good indicators since people that post to TB classifieds generally know the avg market value.
Speaking from experience for So Calif, Fender American Std (make sure it is a Amer Std and not Amer Special or Highway One which are less expensive models) used 1990s-2000's w/ case go for $600 to $850 depending upon condition.
Please note, the above does not factor in mojo. If you find that perfect bass that just feels right and sings to you, then you obviously may be willing to pay a little more if it is a great fit for you.

Any stock USA Fender Jazz Bass W/Case in fair condition or better will most certainly be worth $930 or more.Good Luck
@rockinb, I'm in the Detroit area but I can honestly say there are no shortage of Fender basses. I'll have to double check if it is an American standard or what.
@stonewall, your the first but I'm sure not the last who says this is a good deal. The only thing really holding me back is the cosmedic damage. As stated above though, I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask if they'd be willing to lower the price.

I live near the Detroit area too and have bought quite a few basses locally. I think $930 is a tad high based on the cosmetic damage (again hard to see with no pics). More importantly, what the condition of the truss rod (is it maxed?) would be a bigger concern for me - with older basses you never know.
If all checks out and it's superficial damages as you've stated, I would start at $750 and negotiate from there. Again, remember this is a consignment store, so haggling is a must! They bought the bass for less obviously, so the game is to come up with a price agreeable to both parties. Nothing is set in stone. Higher end (and priced) basses don't move as quickly here in the area as most other areas of the country unless it's a rare bass. MIM Fenders do sell like hotcakes here, not so much MIA- most of the Fenders basses currently on CL are MIM, in fact I just bought a MIM Fender Jazz for $200 two weeks ago near Detroit. I would also call or visit Motor City Music Guitars in Waterford to see what they have in stock used.
Just as comparison of other US Fender Jazz basses in the area on CL.
