The only detail I got was nitro finish. And I think he was talking passive 4 string as that is what I was looking at. To be honest, I could have walked out with the black rosewood Pro II I tried but now he’s got me wondering. And it was a tech not a sales assistant if that makes any difference.

I was recently having a discussion about buying an American Jazz when I was told that there “might” be something interesting (no details given) coming from Fender in October. The level of avoiding specifics led me to believe that there may be some NDA around this. Do Fender often release new lines in October? Im in the UK so I don’t know if that has any impact on release dates? Were there any hints or rumours at NAMM? Anyone able to elucidate?

Fender hasn't done anything new and exciting since the American Deluxe line that had premium woods and electronics as well as upgraded hardware. Stuff like the Am Deluxe Jazz FMT, Am Deluxe Zone, Victor Bailey.....

There is nothing currently even close in the Fender line to my Zone bass. Shame....

I remember when you could buy a P, or a J. Your choice of three or four colors, maple or rosewood fingerboard. Oh, you could get the Precision with a fretless neck. I don’t remember there being a “super dooper” or any other nonsense as a prelude. I guess that when you add passive or active and four or five strings you need adjectives to keep every one happy

I could see them updating the American Original Series but I’m not really sure what direction they would go. I’d be fine with just a new color lineup honestly.

But I could also see them flipping around some of the reissues and doing a 70s Jazz with a rosewood fretboard instead of maple, maybe a 70s P Bass (which they have never really done a true US made 70s reissue P bass AFAIK), 59 style reissue P Bass maybe?

I don't know what year it was made, but at a store in 2017 I played a 70s reissue Jazz with a rosewood fretboard.

I regret not buying it. Indeed, I wish they would make that again. I think it must not have been common even when they did make it?

[EDIT: A quick search suggests it was from their 74 reissue series, and was perhaps more common than I realized. I still regret not buying it. ]

I love Fender. There’s one in my avatar. But Fender hasn’t changed anything about the P or the J since before I was born. Color rotation = old model discontinued and new model introduced.
