Fender just jacked up all it's prices...

Every time Fender raises their prices, we have several of these types of threads pop up. Someone, usually someone that has no intention of ever buying a Fender, states that he will never buy another Fender. Others join in. Somehow, Fender soldiers on.

The lack of a response tells me that the OP never had any interest in actually buying a Fender, and that this is just another lame Fender bash thread...

MSRP exists still because buyers want it. When Dan Lakin started Lakland he advertised his basses at what he thought was a fair markup for the dealer. But that meant the dealers couldn't discount them to a lower price because they were already "discounted". That was a problem for his dealers so he raised the "retail" price without raising the price to his dealers.

That's essentially what Mesa Engineering does and why there's so little room for the dealers to move on price.

The key word in "MSRP" is "Suggested". A manufacturer selling to retailers absolutely cannot demand an item be sold a particular price. The retailer can sell an item at any price they please. If a manufacturer tells a retailer "I won't sell my product to you unless you sell it for $XX.XX.", that is called "price fixing" and is a federal crime.

The above scenario happened to a friend o' mine who runs a video and comics business. She almost got the idiot-in-charge (re: misogynist jerk) to put his demands in writing, but one of his underlings kept him from going forward. Instead, year-after-year he simply "doesn't have any items to sell to you at this time."

Ah, the Minimum Resale Price Restriction loophole, also known as vertical price fixing. Y'know, I'm sure a lot of companies were quite happy when this practice was declared legal by the Supreme Court. However, these agreements only tell retailers what the minimum price they can resell merchandise at. It's not the same as a retailer being told exactly how much they have to sell a product for.

What would be truly illegal would be if competing manufacturers got together to artificially set prices at certain levels, free-market be damned. That would be horizontal price fixing and it's still pounced on by the Justice Department. (e.g.: airlines colluding to set jet fuel surcharge prices)

That being said, I will admit that the tone of my first post was pretty strong and black-and-white. I should have qualified it better. Sorry 'bout that. But shades-of-grey aside, I still stand by the basic gist of what I said.

That was so they could afford to run the 10% off sale some of the vendors are running. That's an old old marketing gimmick. First raise your prices and then run a "price reduced" sale at the old price. Great way to stimulate sales without losing any profit.

Blue is and always will be a tough sale. Red is hard enough.

I'm seeing some other blue Fender imports being dumped at some of the onlines.

Blue gear always gets dumped. It's the only way you can move it. I was amazed to see blue Jaguars in the first place, as if Jaguars didn't have enough problems.
