Fender La Cabronita Precision Bass

Will do!

Gotta love Sweetwater.com - sent me pics before they ship the instrument!

Better photos than the Fender site.

Couldn't decide between red and black until I saw these pics. Think a CAR will be heading my way soon.

Really interested to hear what you guys think of it. This seems to be the year of my wife and I leveraging our own luxury purchases with each other's, and she's up to lasik surgery and a rag doll cat like the ones she saw on "Too Cute," while I just got an 09 Precision and I'm getting a Heritage SVT. But I have to stay one step ahead, so maybe I'll throw this bass on top of it if it goes well with you guys ;)

Initial 2-hours playing time reactions:

-Wow! Mexi-Fenders have gotten waaaay better than 20 years ago!

-Sweetwater for the win! 2 day free shipping? For realz.

-Finish is actually flawless. No swirl or buff marks, scratches or overspray. Headstock decal is seamless with the finish and neck pocket is thousand-dollar bass tight!.

- Setup out of the box was the best I've seen from a retailer. Very low action with no buzzes, intonation was close (I demand better myself, but it was gig-passable) and frets were way better than you expect for 600 bucks! Very even, no sprouting or sharp edges. Impressive.

-Tonally, the Cabronita reminds me of a more aggressive sounding 51 P. Lots of fundamental, subdued highs and very mid-forward tone. It grunts even without pedals or amp clipping! Still very solid bass, but a decided overdrive-leaning grunt! That Fender clip is probably 80% bass & 20% amp/effect! It wants to crunch.

-The reverse wind tuners work great & are familiar to me (most of my basses have 'vintage' reverse wind gearing).

- Electronics are ok. Pots are cheaper, but feel good and work fine. I probably wont replace them. The tone cap is a .022 & really needs to be higher value. As it stands, it really just cuts a little high end & accentuates more mids. I'll be putting a .047 in there for sure! Still, bass is studio quiet & has similar output as my Lollar equipped 62 Reissue Jazz.

-It does have the tele-style cup output jack. These do NOT accept right-angle plugs as is! Fortunately, Switchcraft makes a long-thread jack which remedies this. That will be my other necessary mod.

- Neck is glossy (not a big deal for me & easily rectified with a Scotch-Brite pad). It has a deep U-shape and is narrow laterally. Feels a lot like a real 1951 P that I got to play last year.

Overall- I'm im love! Taking it to TX this weekend for a Sixpence gig. Probably use it on our rockier tunes.

I hope they ship a lot to GC's i really want to try one. The deep U may be off putting. It said in the description it was a c shape. Obviously not a modern C. I am very curious if a 51 pick plate and control cover would fit on this bass with slight mods. I would really consider a 2 tone one if so. And that bridge would have to go. To much like a badass II and i hate those.

Sounds cool, but based on that description, I don't think I can spring for it sight unseen. Actually I don't think I can spring for it at all ;) Probably going to be too much bass for me to be able to use it all night. Since I only use one on almost every gig and don't like to switch, it would have to carry the night. This sounds a little like it won't do it for me like a regular Precision. But if I were doing sessions I'd totally snag it based on that description.

about the name, and being from spain, cabronita is a mix of 2 words, cabron wich means buck (male goat) or ram but it is used for someone whos wife is with another man, it is also used to call some son of a ... but not in a bad way... more like "lucky bastard".

the other word is bonita (wich means beautifull in fem.)

so I think the name means beutifull lady that does what she wants and no cares about her acts.

btw I want the red one! black one is nice but they shoul left that color to the CS, If I had a CS original cabronita and no I see something so similar I would probably be disapointed by fender.
