Thanks. I have 50 - 105 mediums on there now, so I'm wondering if I'll have to do a complete setup if I drop down to 45 - 100. I guess there's only one way to find out!

I've used longscale D'Addario Chromes flatwounds strung through the body on my MIJ Mustang for years with the main part of the string wrapping around the post and the strings never broke at the tuning post or anywhere else. I also didn't have an issue with Fender 9050 (both old and new) strings.

You know I have read that in and around TB for awhile now. I have a 2017 MIM Mustang PJ still with the stock tuners and have not run into that issue. From LaBella's, Dunlops, DR, GHS, and D'Addario which I use exclusively now, all flats.

Since they don't make a medium light set (45-105) I decided to go with the medium scale lights rather than the long scale mediums because in addition to your comment I read an Amazon review that said the tension on these strings is higher than their nickel wounds, which is what I have on my bass now. Hopefully these will work out and my bass won't need any adjustment. For some reason the medium scale set is $6.50 more than the long scale set, but I figured I may as well spend the extra $ and get the proper length.

ALADIN, I just got a set for my Jazz bass (the one in the avatar) -- I'm still waiting on the short scale set for my Mustang. I don't really play the Jazz any more but part of the reason is that I had round wounds on it (after a 17 year layoff I just bought the easiest set I could find on Amazon -- couldn't even remember what I used to use!). Do you find that the D'Addario are, and I don't know how to describe this, a little tacky? Like my fingers kind of got hung up on them a little. I actually took some very fine steel wool and polished them a tiny bit and now they feel better -- which may just be my imagination and them settling in. Anyway very curious to see how they are on the Mustang, compared to the GHS half-wounds on there now.

Yes! I definitely hear what you're saying about the sticky feeling. In fact, I mentioned it yesterday to my friend who recommended them to me; he said it will dissipate as they break in, so I'm going to give it a little time and see what happens.

Howdy Brian!

Well, I'd already ordered the short scale -- fingers crossed they work (they should arrive on Friday. Got them on Fret Nation -- best prices I found). The GHS I have on there now are short scale, so hoping for the best here. My Mustang is the standard PJ so not strung through the body or anything.

Glad I was not imagining that weird "sticky" feeling. It's hard to describe!

High Lisa this is Bob and I am also very glad to meet you. ;€)
I agree with you both about the tacky feeling with DA strings. I have used DA chrome rounds, nickle rounds, and Chrome flats and have had that feeling on all of them. No it is not your imagination as I spoke to a Tech at DA and he stated that a preservative is applied to the strings to prevent them from sticking inside the plastic envelope. His suggestion was to wipe the strings down with a very lightly applied rubbing alcohol to a rag or towel immediately upon removal from the plastic envelope and let air dry for 15 mins to ensure all of the alcohol has evaporated. Then install the strings. I have used this method for about a year now and the problem is no longer a issue. Tacky all gone! The only things that I have that are tacky are my ties.
As for short or medium scale my experience has been with my Hipshot High Mass Bridge the DA short scale tend to have the silk wrapping go over the nut and/or the saddles. With my physical limitations I am unable to trim the silk properly and the medium scale strings solved that issue for me.

You guys might also consider using Dunlop flats. They have been my go to on most of my basses for over a year now. Very smooth and easy to play strings. They don’t have any of that “grabby” feeling when sliding up and down the string, and are really easy on the right hand. Awesome strings. I use the medium scale length on my Mustang PJ.

How do they compare to Thomastiks/Chromes ?(if you have had the chance to compare)

I have indeed. They are a little more similar to Thomastiks, at least feel wise. Flexible, and easy to play. More balanced tonally though. They are bright out of the package, but not in the way Chromes are. Low end response is great. I sound like I am trying to sell them, ha! But the truth is, I just really like the way they respond, and the way they sit in the mix. I don't think about them while I am playing a gig which is sort of what I want.
