Fender player poll

Fender players, what is the main reason you play your Fender?

I play Fenders now and again to make me appreciate my Rickenbacker more.

:p

Just kidding. I actually own 3 Fender basses and two non-Fender Jazz basses. I love 'em all!

EDIT I also have a Stingray - I suppose that's "Fender" in a way, if you think about who designed it.

There is a theory floating around (not mine) that Fenders are like Harley-Davidson motorcycles and a huge amount of the appeal is the history, the community, and the lifestyle. The theory further presupposes that like Harleys, Fenders are utterly out-classed in terms of technical innovation by their competitors, and the allure of tradition and familiarity and "vibe" supercede other considerations, like playability and sound. I am just asking whether players are playing fenders mainly for the playability and sound, or the community, and lifestyle. Personally, I think they look nice, but I play mine mainly because they sound right to me.

Why do I play Fenders? Well it is because my first bass was a Fender so at the time I only had ONE bass which I still have and I play the Roscoe beck 5 I just bought because I happen to really like it. I like it because of the neck, the versatility and the look (which is not really Fenderish at all) not to mention the build quality is very good.

Do I play them as much or more than my Yammie or G&L's, no, but I play all of them for the same reasons. The history has no bearing on what I play or not.

I don't really understand why you have such an issue with people playing Fenders, it seems to me that you are far more concerned with validating your own opinion than with actual facts.

That would be a hypothesis not a theory, a theory is a method of describing groups of related laws and facts therefore it is above either law or fact. A hypothesis is basically an educated guess.

I don't have an issue with it at all. In another thread a poster compared Fender to Harleys stating that Fender players are part of some community/lifestyle and overlook technical limitations of Fenders to be part of that community/lifestyle. I told that poster that that was merely his opinion and not supported by fact, and in fact was no more than amateur sociological ranting. That poster started a poll to test his theory, but I didn't think his poll was really designed to do that -- so I started this poll. Just for fun! btw, I have 10 Fenders at the moment, and I assume that like me, you all play them because you like them, not to fit into some community or lifestyle. I didn't really want to post all of this, because I don't want to skew the results.

Yeah, That Fender lifestyle, Is that when I'm sitting in my practice room alone working on scales & modes? It is so much better lifestyle then my Gibson or Peavey lifestyle. With them I am just sitting alone in my practice room working on scales & modes. Or it must be the times I wear the free The Soul of Tone T shirt that Fender gave me (after I gave them alot of money)

out of all basses i could buy here like washburn, yamaha, esp, greg bennet, aria, peavy, etc etc it was the squier bass i liked the most because it felt natural and easy to play. so the fender style basses became the ones i could be comfy with mostly based on the ease of playing in the start. i also got used to the passive electronics and learned to work around it.
lately when i have been thinking about a modern active kind of a bass with more fret reach like a 5 string i found my answer in a ibanez SR series bass, they are just wonderful! :D

Look at it like this...there are alot of high end Fender copies so that must atone for something right? I love Fenders because they aren't overdone and they seem to have just enough of the right stuff. Sure they're are things that other companies do way better and of course it's a mass produced instrument.

Then again as dime a dozen they may seem it's always cool when you find that color, Jazz or P, that neck, that really just says you as a bassist. I love the sound of this ICONIC instrument and I really feel comfortable when it's in my hands. I have confindence in my Fenders and it helps me achieve what I need to in the music I play.
