Fender pre-CBS Club: pics mandatory!

Didn't see any other pre-CBS P-basses at Gruhn or at Carter's (also went there), but both has some nice 70's Precisions and there was a Harmony at Carter's that I liked a lot. FYI the two Jazz basses you see next to the '59 in my photo are Custom Shop Relics, Gruhn had lots of Custom Shop basses including some really nice '51 reissues that were really well done.

They refinished it and reliced it. Couldn't they leave it alone then? :)

I may be conflating it with a different celebrity-owned P bass, but I could nearly swear the Schmidt bass had been for sale elsewhere and in that listing there was more to the story.

Apologies if this following question is considered verboten as it’s not pre-CBS talk, but who else would know best other than you lot…

If you had to go with a 1970’s P, what year and why?

Before 1975 they tend to be lighter than after. Later 70s Fenders can be really heavy.

Early 70s. My P is a 72 with a 70 pick up and 71 neck. Light, sounds great and has a nice P bass neck.

The earlier the better. CBS tended to cut corners. The longer they were in charge, the more worn out jigs got, the sloppier workmanship got, and the more the money conscious mentality took over the company.

But mines a '66 so...

I decided I’m a total p bass guy and keeping my 62 and 59 maple fb ps. might part with a nice 62 jazz. Pm me if interested
