There are no wear marks on the frets or the back of the neck. Everything is in perfect working order (tuners, pickups, pots, etc.) I purchased the bass from a dealer who got it from the son of the original owner. In the process of researching and learning more about pre-CBS basses I began to strongly suspect the bass to actually be from 1964. The reasons being that the bass had the clay dot markers as opposed to the pearl dots, a very early L-series serial plate, and all three pots were dated from the 40th week of 1964. The neck date would be the decisive piece of information to determine if the bass were pre-CBS or not. I had been reluctant to remove the neck since it looked to have never been removed before. It had been mentioned to me on this site that sometimes if the neck pocket is extremely tight it can chip the paint upon first time removal. Anyway, I couldn't stand not knowing and carefully removed the neck today. Well, see for yourself. Yay! It's from 1964 after all. No damage occurred and the neck has been reattached without issues. Now I can stop wondering and join this fine club.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is a shim. I didn't examine it that close but just put the neck right back on after I took a couple pictures. I bought the bass from Gary's Classic Guitars.

I had to drop a shim in my 62 Jazz neck pocket... I'm afraid I dropped the bass on the way home from a gig, it was in a gig bag but the neck was out of whack when I go it home... what a snugglemuffin!

I'm too scared to touch the truss rod, dont want that bugger snapping on me!

Still plays fine... don't really want to retire it yet.

Shims are normal and lots of Fenders have them, but just an FYI, this is what a factory shim looks like..

Don't be afraid to adjust the truss rod.. it's there to be used. Just loosen it about a 1/4 turn first (turning it counterclockwise), then tighten it/turn it back to where it was to make sure it functions. Then tighten about 1/4 past where it was originally (or more if necessary).. but only if it's still smooth - just don't force it and don't let it get too overly tight and it won't snap.

My rod moves easily and believe me, the dude I bought it from lived in the country and never touched that rod since he bought it used in 1968. That is the smoothest rod I have ever adjusted.

As for the shim being orig, that bass never left that small town until I bought it two years ago and the orig owner nor the guy I bought it from wouldn't know how to shim a neck. I assume it's orig even though I know they usually have a hole in them.

I stand corrected. Never realized there were 2 styles of shims used. I've only noticed the brown ones (and lots of them). Perhaps if I have seen one like yours in the past, I may have never considered it to be original since the shape looks much more like someone cut it out of something, instead of the brown one which looks more like an actual factory made part. Good to know!

I would say the greenish ones were older; probably scraps from fiber used to make black lacquered fiber pick guards As you know, Leo refined as he went along. My guess? Once he went to metal and plastic guards his fiber supply likely dried up and he had to stamp the new brown ones out, complete with the center hole to hang them on the assembly bench. Just conjecture mind you.

Question for the crew - is my 1963 bass supposed to have a black or a brown thumb rest? When I got it the bass had a black thumb rest, but I don't know if it's original because it had been refined and had a 90s era guard. The guy who sold me the bass said that originally they had the brown thumb rests, so I bought a brown one on ebay and that's what's on the bass, but I have seen 60s era Pre CBS basses with what look to be black thumb rests to that are apparently original. Any ideas?
