Fender Precision pickup question

I always think pickup heights and amp gain offer a lot of tonal variety having messed around that way a bit. On pickups I am not an oracle's hindquarters (although I do love my Nordys) but I recently looked at the G&L MFDs and they seem very reasonably priced and G&L SB-1 dudes rave about them.

Edit: I keep reading PBass threads and even though I have a lovely PJ I find myself wanting some form of P. How TB!

Tbh I was like you. Thinking that a PJ will do and can get me that “P sound” easily without wanting a P bass. Not saying that you’re wrong and while some PJ’s (saying some cause I can’t credit all PJ’s) can get you that sound, it’s not the same. Feel wise and wood type especially in the tone department.

That’s exactly what worries me!

Yes!! I have 2 P/J basses, yet I feel I need a “real” P type bass. It’s too easy just to dial in a little of the J for some “growl” when you dig in near that bridge pup..but it messes with the pure P tone when you do that.

I feel I need a P where the temptation is just not there ;)
