Fender "Pure Vintage" Pickups

The 74s have been described on here as smooth. I know it's one of those vague-est of the vague questions, but do they/can they growl? I've always considered 70s Fender Jazz pickups to sound quite aggressive but with a top end that isn't brittle, which is why they get a reputation for being great for thumping/plucking.

I think all of the Fender pickups 'growl', but I assume you mean upper-midrange growl.
In that case it's between the 74's and 75's, the 74's being only slightly warmer.
When you say 'thump', I think lower mid's. In that case the Custom Shop 60's, or (I assume)the 64 pure vintage as well.
I must emphasize this is is by a small margin.

Ok, cool, yeah that's helpful. I think some 'boutique' jazz pickups seem to miss the importance of that upper midrange and sound a bit tame.

By thumping/plucking I actually meant slap/pop (been watching lots of Larry Graham interviews, sorry!). I guess what my questions come down to, is would you say these sound comparable to genuine 1970s pickups (broad a scope as that is)?

Ok. When you said 'thump', I was thinking closer to the upright bass thump, like a walking bass line in jazz.
But based on what you said, the 74's would be the best choice for sure.

To quote post #38
"they almost exactly match my vintage early 70s pickups with only a very slight increase in capacitance from the vintage pickup - they are the closest match I have measured to date."

Brilliant, thanks - guess they're going on my shopping list then :)

Quick Replies, more of them, nice :). No of course, I didn't mean that pickups were not described good, specially by Ray man - respect. I just wanted to wake up the theme, cause I am sure that some more people have tried them out so far and maybe some more views on that.
I also have a plan to buy them and try them; I am sold :). I will write some info, when I do. I will put them in a Jazz Bass in 60's position pickups, so I hope it will not be a problem with good sound because of that.

I understand, I would love to get another opinion on these pickups. I guess people are just unaware of them since they are still new.
Sure, they will work fine in 60's position. I had a set of the 75's in 60's position.

Any info on Fender 64 pure vintage jazz?

I would love to here what they sound like, but I assume they are much like the 60's CS.

I hope somebody can tell us.

I thought the 75 pickups are much more glassy then the 74s. The 74s have a fatter more rounded tone.

I actually like fralins a tad better. But 74s and select pickups are my favorite fenders. Too bad they don't offer the selects for sale outside buying a whole bass. They really cut through.

I tried both the 74's and 75's in the same bass, I agree the 74's are a little fatter and rounded. But I think they have the same upper-mid character. So its hard for me to say one set is better than the other, especially since it's the same bass.

Did you have both the 75 and the 74 avri basses?
The 74 has a fat neck, I wonder if this added to the roundness.

Yeah I had both AVRI not in the same bass....and the 74 neck was really fat it could have made it have a fatter tone.....kinda like warmoth regular necks. I feel like those thick heavy necks give the bass a fatter warmer tone so you are probably right about the 74 neck contributing. I didn't think of that!!

I think the fat neck would make the bass sound fatter. But still, your right about the fatter roundness with the pickups alone, but they are still so similar IMHO.

I have to agree that neck is so so important on bass guitar, people usually don't realize that. I put 62RI fender jazz bass neck, rosewood (Genuine) on my FSR mexico jazz bass body (ash) and the difference was like I bought new bass. Of course I am aware that is also quality of wood, maybe even more; but I was totally surprise - pickups stayed the same (custom 60's) and bass came alive, the tone and specially the growl - so in my exepriences, the growl is in the neck, the most of it :).

And Ray man ... do you have maybe some sound clips of 75 pickups in 60's position bass and what kind of wood is used of course ... solo or with drums or with a band (even better); just asking :)

A guy around here(not me) did a video comparing the 75's vs the 60's CS.

As you can hear the difference is small, but it's the best comparison I found.

Sure, the bass itself will resonate in it's own unique way.
My Fender fsr antigua has a monster neck, combined with the 70's spacing
it has a wide midrange. My Warmouth build(60's spacing) has a warmer rounder sound.
In the end, the antigua got the 74's, while the Warmouth got the 60's CS for the sake of contrast.
It took a long period of trial and error.

Thank you for the video, I already saw it years ago; it is nice comparison, you can hear character of 75's pickups; but it is 70's position; so it 75 pickups and 60 custom shop in 70's position, but anyway, it is good comparison. I was also in touch with this guy, he tried some fender stuff, but now he said that he is all in warwick :); I came from warwick :).

I have - FSR ash body/RI 62 rosewood neck (60's position) - custom shop 60's
- American standard 98; adler body/maple neck (60's position) - standard pickups (the ones that was original on it).
And I would like to change some pickups, try a little and play with it, try to find the best combination for the wood.
