I have a question. Just for the sake of curiosity. Does anyone run a preamp into their rumble? Essentially using the amp as a power amp and cab? I love the sounds from the rumble, just wondering about different options. I mean who doesn’t like new gear? Haha. I’d like to get a dirty SVT sound, but I haven’t played with the amp enough to see if it’s even doable with just the rumble itself.
I use a Tone Hammer DI into the regular instrument input to add a hint of overdrive. I did try it hooked into the amp’s effects return to bypass the Rumble preamp, but it sounded better to me through the front end of the amp which is how I still use it.
Based on my experimentation plugged straight into the Rumble, it think you could conjure up some SVT style sounds. With a passive bass, try setting the input gain around noon, turn on the overdrive with the gain at 9 o clock and level at noon, and dial out a little bit of the upper midrange either with the EQ or turn on the contour switch. Also, turn off your cab’s high frequency horn; I always leave mine off, but SVT 8x10 cabs don’t have them.
I own an Ampeg 8x10 and tried a setting like this with my Rumble 500 head hooked up to it and found it quite enjoyable! That said, budget allowing, it can’t hurt try out some pedals, but make sure you’ve tried every knob, switch, and button on the Rumble first as it may already do what you want.
