Fender Rumble Club

Looking forward to your report.
Rumble report:

The practice went pretty well. I had a couple brain farts (again) but other songs sounded good. I used my Squier CV FSR P bass with the stock pup. I don't mean to sound redundant, but here is a recap of what I was playing through: Rumble 500 head, R410 and R115 cabs. Settings were: Gain (noon), Bass (noon), Low Mid (noon), High Mid (3:00), Treble (2:00), Master (10:00). Vintage button engaged, both horns on. That was plenty to keep up with the guys. I would like to get just a bit more mid bump and treble, so those to settings may be coming up a tad more. Definitely sounded "beefy", warm, and full. Even when hitting notes on the G string! The G string sounded as thick as the D string. I was using GHS Pressurewounds. I am going to bring a couple different basses to the next practice and see how they sound through this setup. I'm especially curios to see how the J (with flats) sounds.

I think a HPF would really balance out the sound nicely. I'm definitely not complaining, just think a HPF helps ALL amps with balancing out the tone/sound. I am going to try using the Drive channel on a couple songs next week and see how that sounds. That, I am really looking forward to!

Sure, after researching for hours I had come to the conclusion this one made sense to me, then I emailed a company called Avatar Speakers what the closest replacement speaker would be. That is what they suggested as well. Yes it sucks, I couldn’t give them a listen. I am sending them back tomorrow so I have the money, since I may have to be replacing my whole rig. I really am having a hard time figuring out what to get. From reading through here, it seems Rumble 500’s don’t love an active bass and now researching the Ampeg portaflex, they seem to have the same problem. I need lightweight due to back problems.. I am not sure which way to go that won’t break the bank. It really sucks because I love my rumble. I hope he can fix it.
I play 2 5-string active basses through my R500c. The volume pots on the basses are turned down slightly and I've had no problem. Sorry to hear that you're having issues. Back problems are the main reason I bought the 500c.

Just curious Kipp, have you tried cutting the bass? Now, I dont have experience with a big rig like yours, but I find that’s the ticket for my lil 100. I typically run bass at 9, the rest at noon; and I much prefer that to boosting my mids or treble. As they say- “cut the frequency you don’t want, instead of boosting the frequency you want.” I just wonder if you’re fighting the bass frequency to cut through. you have plenty of headroom to boost it from there. IDK, just throwing out ideas ;)

I can hardly believe the Rumble 200 combo is this lightweight, especially the cabinet. I was heaving it around yesterday during a complete re-org of all my gear and it was by far the lightest piece of gear I own.

... ... , I’m a little nervous about “pushing” the 410 too far and possibly damaging the drivers. So this week, I have decided to bring my arsenal! I will be using the full 500 watts instead of 350. ... ...

Have no fear for your Rumble 410 drivers, Kipper! That 8 ohm cab is rated for 500 watts continuous, 1,000 program!!! Alone it could only get up to 350 watts continuous from your R500h, no probs. With the 115 it would really be loafing at only up to 250.

It's the 115 that is the weaker link in that rig, rated 300 watts continuous, 600 program. Although it could only get up to 250 watts in conjunction with the 410, some would feel that's enough to put it on top to be able to more easily hear any possible signs of stress (as if!). But, I certainly wouldn't use the 115 alone with the R500h unless I was very sure the volume was going to stay reasonably low.

But it's sure one awesome looking, and no doubt sounding, rig!

This is a great point. I haven’t tried that. Do I will... thanks! BTW, do you play with the Vintage button engaged, or not. Thanks again:thumbsup:

Well, I have been using vintage on, up until recently. Just trying to figure out how to dial in a tone with it off. I notice with it off it’s a little cleaner. I hear more string, fret noise, little things like that. While that sounds like something you’d want to cover up, I’m beginning to think the vintage button adds a layer of mud I might not want in my tone.

Holy crap, I just noticed the Wiki links in your sig @G-Dog! We have a wiki! :wideyed:
Pardon me while I go down this rabbit hole......

Good point, Terri-Tim! I've been so swayed by my new membership number issuing powers that I've neglected to advertise . . . .

Rumble On!

Well update on my 500 situation, took it to my Amp Guy and he says no can fix.. So he’s turning it into a cab for me. I’ve ordered a rumble 800 head and a rumble 115 cab.. freaking cha-Ching ouch.. But now I’ll have a warranty on the new head.

Sorry to hear about your issues. I haven't had any issues with my 500c, but I haven't been so lucky with my two Fender Rumble 40s and one Fender Rumble 100. Fender Rumble 40 and Fender Rumble 100 - Make sure you buy at a place with a good return policy

Is there something specific in the way that the Rumble amps are made that make them difficult to fix? I have to say, I'm a little puzzled…Anybody here ever opened them up to see?

John

I agree. It sounds great at lower volume levels, but it’s quite thunderous when pushed. I guess I’ll be “experimenting” also.

Well, this value line of amps is not made with easily repairable point-to-point wiring, but with inexpensive, hard-to-repair printed circuit boards.

Here's a link to my take on suitable speakers for the Rumble 800 HD: Fender Rumble 800??
And my caveats on the 115 cab with the R500h, above on this page, go double for the R800HD!
