Fender Rumble Club

A Q for the club. Preliminaries: Rumble 500c. Cover band. 70,80,90 rock (not terribly heavy, mellencamp, eagles, skynrd). Getting ready for re-emergence with our first gig scheduled for March. Now the gritty: Last time we played out (outdoors in a patio area for a local rest/bar) I was not put through the PA. Did mic the bass drum (which I'm a VERY big fan of. Gives me that push I think bass needs). Technically there is no 'stage', we're just set up at one empty part of the patio. We have no soundman, (ex-guitarist used to handle that duty but he's gone now). Since I am constantly wireless I've been asked to do that duty during sound check - but I really don't think I'm very good at it. Bottom line Q is this - is not going through the PA a problem for bass? I know it travels farther and less directionally, and I don't think we sounded bad - but I could push to get put into the mix if the overall sound would be improved.

And I'll just put this out there right now. We always are too loud. Always. I will continue to fight the good fight. I'm tempted to go the other route and say "nobody gets in the PA but vocals and keys (and kick drum)" because IMHO the vocals are way more important (and the key's just need the boost since he doesn't PIERCE THROUGH EARDRUMS like the Gs and tends to get lost.)
How many guitars are we talking here and what size amp(s)? How many in the audience?
Have a look for a video Mr @GonePlaid has posted previously of his band on a patio with the 200C, was a nice mix. Would you need to be louder than that?

My Rumble 200c is still under warranty. I think I got one of the last ones with a 5 year warranty. I'd like to open it up and spray some DeoxIT to get rid of the scratchy pot noise. But would that void the warranty? Just rotating the knobs back & forth hasn't been enough to make the scratch go away.

Rather than risk possibly voiding the warranty I think you should, instead, make it a warranty issue! Contact Fender Consumer Relations and see what they say. Be sure to have your purchase information handy to verify warranty eligibility. And, please, let us know how it goes.

Beautiful li'l R40c, maxie! @tothemax, you are now member #1288 in the Fender Rumble Club. Welcome and make yourself at home here and on the Rumble Club Wiki page, which is chock full of all kinds of Rumbleness.
Tell us a bit about yourself so we'll know where you're coming from. We've got members from all over, but the one thing we all have in common is that we all love to ... ...

Rumble On!.
Thanks for the welcome aboard... Like the rest of the folks here, I've developed a liking for this little amp. Fender really came up with winner, IMHO. I've become CO-BL of a part time band, just south of Annapolis MD. A mix of part timers and members of other bands (we're all 50+, some of us ++ ;)). I played guitar for many years and while I still play a bit of the 6 stringer, it's primarily the bass these days (and feeling quite comfortable there). Our repertoire spans from "What's going on" to "Free Bird", so we have a good time.

Well, that's what I was thinking. I'll give them a call someday soon.

I have a Rumble 200cv3 on top of a 210v3 and man! Solid sound. Always love the 15 in the 200 and when I added the 210 there it was. My earlier amp/cab experience is Ampeg SVT/Fridge SWR GK Acoustic and others. The Rumble is my favorite! Pros-lightweight and great sounding Cons didn’t have it in the 70’s!:D

Adding my opinion based on many years of experience to this. Most of the time when people say "the band's too loud", they actually are referring to the piercing-ness of the guitars, which really carries, esp. inside, but outdoors too. My 200cv3 has never had the volume above 'noon'.
Oh. And we haven't run instruments through the PA in 2 years.
I felt the same way bout my 200cv3 till I played a gig recently and found that I was getting lost in the mix (rare) - My "eureka" moment came just 2 weeks ago when I brought my 200cv3 with a small 115 ext cab n VOILA! These Rumbles got some more gears when u simply add a cab.....

Yeah, remember the 200cv3 is 140W w/internal only. Hafta add an 8ohm ext to get all 200W.

Interesting[read: odd]gig tonight. Dinner/dance at a BIG RV(the Bus type) showroom. Jazz/dinner music at 5:00, probably some ceremonies, then dancing 'til 10-ish(long night for us 'old folks'). The place is like a big @$$ hangar-except nicer-I'm gonna be using the 200c-lotta air to be moved. We're not planning to run instruments through the PA(2 daisy chained Bose L-1's)but we can. They don't want us too loud so people can talk at the tables on the other side of the (temporary)dance floor. Should be either a fun gig or a train wreck. Details later-assuming we/I survive.

Not taking the 100 for possible chaining to the 200. You know, like, just in case that "hangar" sucks up all the low freqs.

Honestly, it's 5 minutes from the house. I could come back for it if needed.
Hmm. Now that I think of it, I can leave the P____ backup amp at home and take the 100 instead. Thanks for the idea.

Maybe it's time to retire the P_____ to keeping the Kasino company and just let the 100 reside in the van for backup and/or augmentation of either the 40 or the 200? Just a thought.

No. I don't want to expose the 100 to the vagaries of FL weather. The P____, I don't really worry over.

Can u elaborate a lil more re: your statement, " Gotta move alot of air" - Are u saying that in big open spaces like a hangar the 15/s are more conducive to providing better "sound delivery" vice 10s in that type of environment?
2x10's might move more air. I prefer the sound (and slightly less weight) of 1x15.

I did an embarrassing thing Rumblers.... I placed an online order for a used Fender Rumble 200c and then promptly went and sold three smaller combo amps to make room around the house: a Rumble 40, Rumble 100, and Ampeg BA108. Feeling good about making room for the new amp and having some cash in my pocket I returned home only to find an e-mail from the proprietor that the order had been canceled because the amp in question had been returned to the store with a blown speaker and he could not sell it--an honorable action. Anyway, the only thing to do at that point was to buy a Fender Rumble 115 cabinet which should be here before the week is out. I really have plenty of amps, heads, and cabinets, but that Rumble 100 was a very sweet thing; 22 lbs of let's go play some bass... I wouldn't have let it go had I known the Rumble 200 would not be mine. While I still have a Rumble 800 head (and other cabs) and an Ampeg PF20T, I will miss the Rumble 100. The next owner will love it.

Well. The 200cv3 was more than enuff. The 100 woulda done the job, but I'd already brought in the 200 and we had to park in the 'back 40' so the customers had the close spaces. They liked us 'cos we do a variety of stuff from light jazz/dinner music to classic rock(whatever that is)so if we go back, it'll be the 100. Easy $200 on a Wednesday night.
