So what was everyone's *first* Rumble? ... ... ....
The Rumble 500 combo was my first Rumble. The Big Kahuna! I ordered it fully expecting to return it. At just $499 in 2014, nothing could be that inexpensive, that lightweight and sound any good, right?!? I just wanted to see for myself where it fell short. But, OMG!, how amazingly light! And what great tone!!! At such a great price!
I had just recently converted my MIJ Jaguar bass to BEAD tuning and the R500c even handled that low B like a champ. My loud country cover band was astounded when I first took it to rehearsal. They, and I, were used to my Bassman 250 combo, often with my Bassman 150 combo chained to it, and both cranked, to keep up. The R500c alone blew them away!! At a couple of outdoor gigs I added my Bassman Neo 115 cab for the full 500 watts and that low B
felt so freakin' awesome! But I had to keep turning down 'cause I got so carried away!
After 8 years, the Rumble 500 combo is still my #1 go-to loud bass amp. I got the Bassman 500 head after the R500c and, yeah, it's got some great tones that the Rumble doesn't have. But, to my ear, they are not that much greater to warrant taking out to gigs. The Bassman combos are just languishing. So the Rumble goes everywhere, while I play the Bassman 500 at home, until I someday get that studio call needing its tubey goodness and/or ultra-deep tones.
Meanwhile, for more casual jams in recent years, since the country band broke up, my Rumble Studio 40 has been plenty! Plenty volume! And plenty of versatile tones with, or without, all kinds of effects built-in!!
