march25 rig.jpg

Yesterday's rig, I just brought the Rumble 500. No extension cab. This is an outdoor venue. It was over 100 degrees yesterday, so we were trying to save energy moving equipment. But those 2 tens can move some air. I don't think I'll need to bring the extension cabs to any of the future gigs here - we have 2 more next month. I'll save myself the trouble. This one box was more than enough. The master volume was maybe at a third and gain was maybe at the same. Really impressive combo.

Gig Report:

Last night I played a church social dinner for older congregants. But the young-ish preacher brought his 5 young kids and some other young kids helped serve and clean up. Approx. 60'x80' Fellowship Hall with 15' ceiling about half-filled with 60-70 people at big round tables seating 6-8 comfortably. 🥳

2 amped A/E guitars, 1 amped fiddle (State Champion playing) and me with my short-scale BEAD 7ender Starcaster semi-hollow direct into my 7ender Rumble Studio 40 using a thumpy, hollow "Acoustic Upright" preset downloaded from the 7ender Tone App community. Both guitarists, a lady vocalist, and I singing various parts of the hymns and gospel songs using a single mic. I usually play smaller rooms with the Rumble Volume at ~25% and the bass's Atomic Humbuckers at ~80% when I'm the only amped instrument. But I started this gig with the Rumble at ~50% and the bass at ~45% to start to allow for extra headroom if needed to keep up with the 3 other amps in the bigger room.

Rehearsal beforehand: none whatsoever!! 😬 But we have all previously performed in various other venues & jams with other people to inconsistent results. I'm the youngest of this group and the oldest sometimes seems to fall asleep mid-song even when singing lead! 🙄 I was hoping for the best, but expecting some large amount of awkwardness!!

We musicians ate first and started playing right after our dessert while others continued eating. The oldest guitarist sang the first song, but my prayers were answered when he really put some pep into it! The other songs were also surprisingly lively and I really got into it myself!! Midway through, the pastor made a joke about "dancing Baptists" that got a big laugh, but I wouldn't have been surprised to see some! It was a fun time for all! I even took the high harmony on "I'll Fly Away", rather loudly since all four of us were singing and I was farthest from the mic, to the pleasant shock of the lead singing guitarist. And of course, the fiddler stole the show on every song! And I didn't have to adjust my trusty li'l Rumble's volume or tone at all the whole time!! This was, by far, the best performance I've shared with these guys & gal! I do SO love to ... ... ...

I think Dancing Baptists would make an excellent band name. 😎

So, after a lot of thought, I went ahead and ordered one of these Broughton Low + High Pass Filter pedals for my Fender Rumbles. Sometimes, I need to turn my bass up louder like when I played on St. Patrick's Day. It can get a little muddy in some rooms with all the super low tones that a bass produces. A high pass filter takes out only the lowest frequencies and cleans up your sound. I got the one with a low pass filter also so I can try to dial out the little bit of fret clank from my strings that I find annoying. Other than a Barber Compressor once in a while, I've never really used pedals with bass.

True story, I even have the ancient, very early last century newspaper article to prove it, my paternal grandfather, the small-scale farmer, was excommunicated from his small, country Baptist church for dancing in public! It was actually a very long article listing names of many other dancing ex-Baptists, some others for public intoxication, and even some others for transgressions too salacious to be printed!! Sounded like quite the party. My grandmother, who was not listed, said that poor little church never recovered from such an extensive purge. 🥳

My Dad (RIP) was born in 1917 and became a Southern Baptist preacher when he was 41 years old (his grandfather had been a Baptist preacher (not sure which denomination)).

Dad mostly pastored in small country churches.

I could tell you some stories about Baptists for sure (this is probably not the thread for that).

[I'm a non-denominational believer, which means I can dance all I want!]

Well, I played my first gig with my new Rumble 800c. I must say, I was extremely pleased with the sound. I had none of the white buttons pressed, set EQ to 12-2-2-10, playing a P-Bass with flats and foam mute, and a Broughton HPF set to about 50hz. I was astounded with the volume. It was a large meeting room with about 50 people, roughly equivalent to a small bar, and I had the amp switched for "Low" power, the Gain at 12, and the Master at 11. The sound guy was impressed, and said the bass was "rockin' the place". I can't imagine how loud it might be with an extra cab and really cranked. Don't know if I'll ever have the opportunity to find out, but it's nice knowing all that reserve power is available!

Count me as another satisfied Rumble customer.

I have the 500 and it gets most gigs I do just fine especially with a 2-10 ext cab! I wish I had gotten the 800 for other reasons. Glad it is working for you!

Can confirm, 2x10 extension definitely adds some booty. I dont think I can play the r500 alone with out it any more lol

Hello, Low! @Lowdown68, you are now member #1904 in the Fender Rumble Club. Congratulations and welcome. Please put that number in your TalkBass Signature for safe keeping. Then make yourself at home here and on your Rumble Club Wiki page, the repository of all Rumbling wisdom and knowledge.

Do you never play smaller rooms? Not that the 350W of the standalone R500c is much kess than the 500W with the 210 cab, but the extra speakers add a lot to the tone!

So, how about telling us a bit about yourself, Low, such as your bass experience in general and your Rumble journey in particular? You'll fit right in here since we have all kinds. But, we all love to ... ... ...

One of these I'd say ... broughton S300 Preamp

Ah! "... a recreation of the 70s SVT preamp. ... With outputs that can drive a power amp and a mixing board simultaneously, ..." No doubt it plugs into the R500c's FX Return, I presume. Costs almost as much as the Rumble stack itself! 😲
