Fender Rumble Club

Rumbles At Work! Here is a shot of very shabby 'Dressing Room A' of the Jefferson Theater in downtown Charlottesville. Blues Traveler bass player Tad Kinchla's Fender Dimension bass and roadworn V2 Fender Rumble 30 as his personal practice amp.

Better late than never! Picked up the V3 200 Combo instead of the 500. Traded an old Fender BXR200 and a 410 Transporter cab (picked them up used about 13 yrs ago for the price of the V3 200 today. They were both Very Well used and no longer up to my live show standards). I'm not currently in a band or playing shows, but I don't anticipate having much of an issue if I do start playing out again. Even if I do, an extension cab will fix that. I'm loving the tone, but that's no surprise. Fender amps have always come the closest to capturing "my sound'.

While I'm in a kind of nostalgic mode, for those of you that don't know or remember, TalkBass used to be the most anti-Fender location on the internet. Flame Wars; Personal Assassinations, Cheap Pot Shots, and Low Blows were commonplace. Fender Bashing was the unofficial sport of TalkBass. For some this is still true, and that's how they operate.

Fortunately many things have changed for the better, and we are proud to be part of that change.
just out of curiosity, how long ago was that? I hated Fender in the 80's, renewed the hatred in the mid-90's, disregarded them as a result in the 2000's, then played an American Deluxe in the 2010's. Markedly better quality. Now with the Rumbles, it's clear that Fender is going through some sort of renaissance. Hope it holds.

I think I may be in a new band! Yea! I auditioned yesterday, and I am always amused at musician's reactions. That's a Fender Rumble?!!! Yes it is. Are those twelves?! Yes they are Eminence Neos. Man, that rig sounds good!! Yes it does
Thank You. ;) Rumble On! :bassist:
I got sick of that so I took off the Fender logo and taped over the Rumble designation. People think it's a boutique amp. If Fender pays me I'll put the stuff back on. :-)

Yeah, it can get quite distorted, caution must be used or it may rip your face off. :woot:

It's not a buzzsaw distortion, just a really burly overdrive, so if you want something more specific you may need a pedal. I usually use mine with the level at noon and the drive between 11 and 1 o'clock, depending on my mood or the song. How it sits in the mix will depend on your other settings and those of the rest of your band. I tend to boost my mids over lows and highs, and I sit really well in the mix.
Generally, I dislike distortion on bass. However, we have one song for which I can never get quite the right tone - Allman Bros song, and the sound just never is right to me. The other night on a whim, I pushed in the overdrive button and dialed in a sound. I won't say it was perfect, but adding a healthy bit of distortion was really cool and made the band sound better on that song. It was a lot of fun. Most times I'll never use it, but for me, for a giggle, the overdrive channel is a hoot.

Okay this is probably a beyond stupid question, but I have to ask it...

I have a cheap Chinese strat copy on its way (SX Haw) I have been wanting to play a little bit of the higher strung cousins as well, but no amp as of yet. I have heard great things about the Hawk and at $69.95 I just couldn't say no... Did I mention no amp?

Oh for those interested, Link Removed. As I type this on sale for $69.95. That's B stock pricing there! And if this turns out half as decent as my SX Ursa 1 Bass, it'll be a real winner...

Would it hurt the Rumble if I were to use it to play the Hawk through?

Also, any Rumble owners want to give a recommendation for a budget friendly, but good combo guitar amp? I am thinking about saving up for a Fender Champion 100, but am open to other ideas...
You won't hurt that bass amp playing a guitar through it. But you will really piss it off.

@bdplaid: almost from the very beginning. The Amps sub-forum became a kind of no-man's land. If you didn't have a zillion tube watts of boutique gear and 16x10's, well you were just dirt. I remember someone claimed to have an 8x15. It was insane. On the bass guitar side it was almost as bad if you didn't have some custom luthier made bass with many more than four strings, again you were a little less than nothing. TalkBass did an excellent job of getting things in hand, but of course it took time and much effort.

On the Fender side of things. It takes a lot of ocean and time to turn an aircraft carrier around, and that is exactly what Bill Schultz was doing in the 1980's. C.B.S hired Schultz away from Yamaha USA in 1982 to save Fender from impending doom, the demise of which was CBS's own doing. In 1985 Schultz put together a group of private investors to buy Fender back from CBS and take F.M.I.C. private. Mark Fukunaga is a native Hawaiian US Citizen and guitar player with an intense love of all things Fender. He is the majority shareholder, and has been since day 1 (all shares are privately held). From 2000 on, Fender has made great strides across the board. The advent of the Fender Rumble line in 2003 is just one of them. Bill Schultz succeeded in saving Fender. He retired in 2005 and died of cancer in 2006. There are entire books on the history of Fender. Read them. ;)

If anyone is ashamed of their Fender badging, please send them to me. I am building a Fender room and need as much Fender stuff as possible.

No shame here. More like Fender pride. Assuming either my wife or I get good enough on guitar the Behringer will get sold off in favor of a Fender Champion 100.

Just noticed something strange. The Rumble 500, 200, 100 and 40 all have 1/8" headphone jacks. The 25 and 15 have 1/4". I wonder why? I would have thought the 1/4" would be the better choice - 1/8" is OK for a phone, but it seems a bit fiddly on a combo amp - especially on something as large as the 200 or 500. If anything, it seems that 1/8" would be more natural on the smaller combos. But why not use the same size on all of them?

Smaller amps are designed for rehearsing at home silently with headphones. Larger amps are for playing out at full volume, no need for headphones.

Hey "bdplaid",
So 2 of the Fender Rumble 112's would work well together?
Are they ported as well?
I'm looking at 2 speakers that would handle a 5 string as well.
IMO it's killer. I am a 5-string player and I have two of them, and sometimes I only use one. they handle everything I throw at it. for some places, I just use a single 12 and really like that rig a lot. the thing I like about the 12 cabs is they don't have as much boom as the other cabs. they seem more high-mid focussed. low end is tight, and they have the throatiness that a good 15 will produce. fwiw, i love single 15" cabs, and never been a fan of 12's until this rumble 12. I use a 500 rumble head with them. or with the single cab.
also, I have a 500 combo, that is also really good, but can get boomy; IME the 12s never do.
the 500 combo with a single 12 extension cab is also really nice. I didn't like a 210 ext cab with the combo, too much low end. The 15 might be OK, but I wasn't wild about the sound of the rumble 15. same with the 410; I don't care for 410s generally. modern speakers do better than a 410 with fewer speakers. IMO, of course!
