Fender Rumble Club

All right - I caved. I admit it. I went and got a Rumble 500 combo today. For no good reason, except that I wanted to. Holy cow, this thing rocks!

Be very, very careful, that rig will inspire you! Tends to interfere with silly things like sleeping...

So, I'm reading a bunch of threads on TB about damping and bracing cabs. I've got no reason to consider doing both, other than the seemingly conventional wisdom that both will likely improve any cabinet that's lacking. If done correctly. :hyper:

I am completely happy with everything I've heard from my v3 500 combo. I am also very curious. Having voided one warranty already in my short musical life, I don't think I want to again with a product I'm already extremely satisfied with. BUT, I had to take a look.

Most of what I read led me to not expect any damping at this price point. However, I was very pleased to find about a 1.5 Inch, white (batting type?) lining on the back wall. Most of what I read suggested the back wall was the most important and yielded the most results. Just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone who was diving into the same search frenzy I was on last evening. :bassist:
I happened to look into the port of my V3 500 Combo yesterday and mine has the white batting type material too.

Your answer is incorrect. Aliens do indeed wear hats...

Not quite, but the Gestaltist Weltanschauung is diametrically opposed to Spockian Logic.
Science is a tool to be used. Not a master to serve. Yet, enslavement to science is common. Still no reason not to pop a Rumble 500 combo on top of a Rumble 410 cabinet and listen with an open mind.
The Rumble 500 combo is a perfect example: there is no reason on God's earth is should work as well as it does, is as loud as it is, not sound as good as it does, and be as inexpensive as it is. but there it is. Heaven's work in all it's glory.

Now, start throwing numbers around, and we mess up all that heavenly magic, proving definitely that numbers are the work of Lucifer.

BTW, yes, this is a joke.

so i never really mix guitar heads/cabs with bass heads/cabs, but do you guys think the rumble 410 would work as a guitar cab? i have a peavey ultra plus, which is a 120 watt guitar amp with a half power switch, which is what i usually run it at. the head can be ran at 8 ohms to match the cab, so can the fender handle a semi heavy guitar distortion or is there a chance i'd blow the speakers? i'm not gunna use it long term, just for a little while tomorrow afternoon to try and figure out the best settings on the amp

I have never heard of a guitar head blowing a bass cab. I have only heard of a bass head blowing a guitar cab. That said, a bass cab is probably not the most reliable thing to use when trying to find the sweet spot on a guitar head, but not because you would do any harm to the speakers.

i hear ya, but i feel like it could get me close. i know i'll have to readjust the EQ a little to compensate when i go back to a guitar cab, but i'm lookin to figure out differences between the 2 gain channels, a couple gain switches, and the dampening switch too. there's a lot to mess with

Lots of people run guitar heads through bass cabs to get a deep tone with lead solo's. Sounds great, but rhythm will be horrendous.

You beat me to it...

Sort of...

I have seen it done, with the older 410 cab, and it didn't sound right.

Generally speaking, you CAN use a bass cab for guitar, the sound won't be ideal, but it will work without threat of shredding speakers, or blowing the amp...

Using guitar cabs with bass heads / bass guitars though, BAD idea. This tends to lead to destroyed speakers, and anxious promoters while the bass player scrambles for a way to be heard, usually by DI'ing to FOH and stepping in front of the PA speakers so he can monitor himself. I have seen it done, it's really not pretty.

Dumb question time (yay!).... Seriously though, I have the Fender 500 Combo, if I add the 2x10 extension cabinet, it's 700 watts so it's safe.... However, I see if you get the 500 head and a 1x15 cabinet, the cab is only 300 watts, so if you push the head to much, it can blow out the cab right? What if you get 2 of the 15" cabinets, would it be 600 watts now or does it still stay 300 watts?

Actually, without an extension cab, you will get only about 350 out of the combo. The 500 is assuming a 4 ohm load. With no extension, the amp is seeing 8 ohms. Add the 2x10 cab, which is 8 ohms and now you are at 4, so you get the full 500.

Thanks...and the 2x10 extension cabinet is rated at 700 watts, so the head should never blow this cabinet....but what about the 2nd. part of my question? :)
