Fender Rumble Club

My only concern with my Rumble 100 is that the speaker seems...what's the word?..."papery?" Like maybe it isn't very robust? Maybe it is, I dunno. But it has a sound on attack as if it flaps, or something. Not because I'm overdriving it, though, I'm not. Really. Thought maybe I was hearing my nails, but no, it does it with the side of my thumb, too. I hope it's not a lemon. Perhaps I'll go back to the store and play a different one and see how it sounds. I will also check in the headphones to see if it's a function of the amp (just thought of that). It's not my bass, the Markbass doesn't do it. My Bassman 150 doesn't either.

First thing I would do is make sure all the mounting bolts are snug.

I found a 100 in guitar center that was totally blown. Perhaps the speaker is the weak link in those. The speaker in my rumble 112 took a solid 600 w peak before starting to smell, and it wasn't really farting out, but since it was on the floor I might have missed some subtle stressing. Of course that cab costs the same as the combo, and is touted as an eminence, not the same speaker in the 100. I'm sure it can take half the load of a 500 head/combo at stage volume no problem, but I was running a yorkville bass master 400 through it, and didn't mind the 40hz slider was up too high. Damn spb3 pickup! Speaker still works fine, the smell was a warning smell. After turning that 40hz eq down, and a slight back off of volume, it still worked fine. I used it a couple times since at its usual 100w load (half of the 200) and no problems.

Perhaps the rumble 100 benefits from a.speaker upgrade like the old rumble 75 did.

I felt the 100 combo speaker to be unable to take what the amp could give. I didn't have that feeling at all with the 200 or 500 combo. I was going to keep the 100 at home for practice but after that feeling I might damage the speaker, I returned it.
200 will take it all and the amp will compress and run out of juice long before the speaker even shrugs. 140w with speaker protect clip limiting vs a speaker that can take 300w RMS all day... The day that 5yr warranty expires is the day that gets the Eric B mod, would make a great 115 cab for a higher powered head. Iirc Eric upgraded the speaker in his 100 too

I did my own mod by selling the 500 combo for a 500 head and 15" cab. Linnin has my 200.

The 115 cab and the 200c box do sound a little different, but I guess nothing a cut of the bass knob couldn't compensate for. The 115 is definitely boomier and the 200c has a tighter response. Of course subtractive eq of the lows to compensate will give more amp headroom, so either case is a win win.

I'm still waiting for the ocd friendly 115mkII Jr cabs to come out, vertical 115 identical to combo/210 dimensions. Not gonna happen...

Has the 115 complained at all after extended use at 350w?

I haven't pushed it much since it is way more than I need. It feels quite capable in the few times I've really turned up - no issues at all. I can't decide on the next cab matching or just get something different for an option. Even with a loud drummer I don't need to push it.

There are a few posts on here where some upgraded their speakers for that very reason on a few of the combos and cabs. I know the 500 was one of them. I remember there was a few vids...perhaps sound clips as well. A search should bring them up.

I miss my bass350 son of bertha, rarely did I use it that way since I favored my 410s and 210s, but 240w of honest power through a well boxed 115 with an awesome driver was pretty sweet the few times I decided to run it that way. The rumble 200 reminds me of that somewhat, and I wanted to try the son of Bertha as an extension for the 200, but high desert thieves put and end to that, leaving me with just the 200, and 410 and cheap backup head in storage.

Realistically the full depth swr cabinets are not as friendly on the back and space wise in a small car as the rumbles are, but it would still be nice to still have my stuff...

Too late for me to return it, so let's talk about replacement speakers -- serious ones. I've heard folks on this thread changing to Kappalite and Basslite. But I'm not up on speakers, so I need some advice. I think my 100 is plenty loud if only the speaker could handle it.

What should I look for, a 200w speaker? More? What's a good neodymium model? And what about the Kappalite and Basslite. Are they good enough?

Also, has anyone gigged a 100 v3 hard, and I mean HARD, to see what it can take?

For a 12" combo an Eminence Deltalite II 2512 is a good choice too. I think there was someone who did that to their Rumble 100 and didn't have to change the porting...
That would be one @eric_B, an ultra intelligent lefty from the Netherlands. Either choice is good. The Deltalite II simply has greater power handling capacity that you don't need for a 100 watt amp. In a blind listening test between the Basslite and Deltalite both installed in a Rumble 100, I seriously doubt you could tell any difference.

Power handling between the 2 models? Can't say I'm not doing future planning for my 112 cab, warranty is up in June, not sure how much lifespan was taken off by the overpowering smell incident. Would want at least 250rms, a little more would be welcome, not having to make any changes to the cab would be nice too.
