Fender Rumble LT25, Studio 40 & Stage 800

Has anyone here (@NordicBard maybe?) hooked up their Rumble Studio 40 to a HeadRush FRFR-112? I've been thinking about picking one of those up from Guitar Center mainly to use with my VT Bass DI, and it occurred to me that it might be a great way to make my current Rumble a lot louder without spending too much money.
Interesting question. Apparently this goes down to 44 Hz at -10 dB.

I think it’s just a matter of time until FRFRs start specifically supporting bass.

Hear! Hear! And I can think of no better place to start than 7ender's Invalid Link Removed!

Had the opportunity to use my 210 extension cabinet recently and was unable to disconnect the speakon cable from the Stage 800 or the 210 cab. This was the first time this happened. Finally got the cable off the Stage 800 but still haven't been able to remove it from the 210 cab. Anyone else have this issue and have way to resolve it? Thanks.

I've read that there are frequently problems with non-Neutrik™ speakON® connectors!
I believe Fender uses only genuine Neutrik™ speakON® combo ¼" connectors. Check your amp, cab and cable connectors.

I'm not sure that genuine Neutrik™ connectors always have that name on them, but I look for it when I'm buying.

Are the neutrik connectors on Rumbles twist-ons? I haven't used the DI XLR outputs on my Studio 40. The ones on my GR Bass AT combo and cab are. You twist/rotate the cable connector to lock it in place. Maybe that's what happened to @RL5 ?

It's my understanding, right or wrong, that all speakON® connectors are twist on, unless you count the ¼" plug part of the combo connectors. Some of the cheap knockoffs may not untwist-off like they should.

XLR connectors are totally different from speakON® and usually don't twist at all. But they do have a positive latching/unlatching mechanism.

Yes, these are twist on connectors. They twist, but don't release. I've tried using a fairly significant amount of force and still can't get the one connector off the extension cabinet. And I'm afraid to connect it back to my Stage 800 since I had so much trouble disconnecting it last time. I had used it several times before this without issue, so I'm not sure what went wrong this time.

Augck! Please be very careful, RL!! Some knockoff speakON connectors can actually cause damage to their counterpart!! Maybe take your cab, with attached cable, to an amp tech to disconnect, hopefully without damage. 😱

How about some helpful and encouraging discussions about these bass modeling amps? Not a club, just a thread where owners, users, or shoppers can ask questions or just talk about what they like, or would like to understand, about these versatile amps.

The Fender Rumble LT25, introduced in 2019, and the Studio 40 and Stage 800, introduced in 2018, are the current incarnations, and expansion, of the bass modeling amp line that began in 2006 with the Fender B-DEC 30 and continued with the Fender Bronco 40 in 2011. The Rumble Stage 800 broke new ground as a large gigging bass modeling combo amp capable of outputting 800 clean continuous watts into either one, or two(!), 8 ohm extension cabinets, in addition to it's internal speakers. The Rumble LT25 is the newest model which makes a subset of the Stage & Studio modeling presets available to the practicing, or beginning, bassist at a very affordable price.

I have owned, gigged, and enjoyed, a Fender B-DEC 30 for over 10 years. I finally gave up waiting for it to develop a problem, as an excuse really, and bought a Fender Rumble Studio 40 anyway just a few months ago. I like many, though not nearly all, of the preset sounds from the B-DEC. But I like SO many more of the Studio's presets. And the Tone App on my phone makes controlling the Studio a great deal more convenient. And, luckily for me, the same 4-button footswitch I've been using for the B-DEC works like a charm with the Studio! Fender even sent me a free magnetic overlay for the footswitch that updates the buttons' labels. Alas, I've never delved very deeply into tweaking, or creating, presets. A shortcoming of mine that, perhaps, this thread can encourage me to overcome?

What do you think?
There is a Fender Rumble Club. The people there are very nice. The moderator, @G-Dog, is a great guy. He has written a very good wiki for Rumbles. You don't have to Join. Best source for Rumbles you will find on TB

Why ... Thank you, Gravy Davy, for that totally unsolicited testimonial! [whisper] Your check is in the mail, as agreed. [/whisper] That's SO nice of you to say. 🙂↔️

However, lest anyone get the wrong idea, I'm not a TB moderator, nor admin, but merely just another Supporting Member, like so many others, with no special access or authority. I merely maintain the Rumble Club Membership wiki and hand out numbers to new members, at your bequest BTW, Dav. I don't run the TB Fender Rumble Club, it's members do (and quite well, too)!

I began curating the Rumble Club Wiki page of information even before all that, though, as just an enthusiastic member, and it's become a labor of love for me over the years. Members' suggestions for inclusion are solicited and greatly appreciated.

Again, thank you, Dav. 🤗

We now return to your regularly unscheduled nonprogramed discussions ... ... ...

Hi, just found this tread today and really want to thank you for all the information. I was searching for the list of presets on the Rumble LT25/Studio 40 and really pleased to have found it here. Also, it’s great that the thread is still going strong after all the years that it’s been going. I’d dug about for certain things (including the Wiki page) which is great, but with so much info, there’s a couple of things I’m curious about but not sure I’d know how to find it. Apologies if I’m brining up anything that has been done to death!

I’ve been an average guitar player on and off over the last 30 years, and now I’m interested in becoming an average bass player! Ha ha!

I’ve been going down the gear rabbit holes and discovered the Rumble modelling amps which I’m thinking would probably be best for what I’m looking to do, which is play at home through headphones feeding in play along tracks, but also have the ability to play through the speaker at times when I wouldn’t annoy anyone.
I’m now torn between the LT25 and the Studio 40. It’s a shame the LT25 doesn’t have a line out, and not sure if the Studio 40 is way beyond my needs. It just seems a bit short sighted to by the smaller one which shoots you in the foot when/if I find that I want to do things that are beyond it’s means. I think I saw a post that said the group no longer had interest in the LT25. What would you guys think? Is it only really worth having the Studio 40?

Has anyone done any gigs with the Studio 40? Just wondering what it’s capabilities are. Whilst I will mainly be doing home practice, if one day I decided to get to play with others and even progress to a local pub gig, could the studio 40 handle something like this?

Thanks

Well, howdy there, g! Welcome to this Rumble modeling thread. Glad you found us, and the Rumble Club Wiki, too! This is actually referred to as a sub-thread of the main TalkBass Fender Rumble Club thread, which where you should go to say "hi" and tell us which Rumble you have, in order to get your free membership. 🙂

I was a self-taught guitar enthusiast for about 10 years in the '60s before adding bass duties in the '70s. And, yes, I still enjoy the very rich sound of a solo 6-string thru a good bass amp. 😉

Have you used much guitar modeling, g? Or have you read the short History of Fender Bass Modeling Amps here in this thread, for background? And then there's the magnificent Droopy_TX Rumble Preset Experience that goes far beyond merely listing the preset names!!! I hope you've browsed the DETAILED Stock Presets and the Presets DECODER lists there, documenting the Studio 40 & Stage 800 default stock settings. It's a lot to take in, so feel free to ask questions. 😁
It's not that the group has lost interest in the LT25, so much as the few LT25 owners we have just aren't as active as the Stage and Studio owners. Maybe we just haven't gathered enough of a "critical mass" of LT25 owners to be able help with their questions as much as Stage & Studio owners?! It seems quite different from the Stage & Studio. But, it does have headphones output and auxiliary input for home practice. And, in my opinion, the LT25 can certainly be used for small jams and gigs. 🤗

... ... ... Has anyone done any gigs with the Studio 40? Just wondering what it’s capabilities are. Whilst I will mainly be doing home practice, if one day I decided to get to play with others and even progress to a local pub gig, could the studio 40 handle something like this?

Yes! Because most of my gigs and jams are with other acoustic instruments (country, bluegrass, Americana, ...) my Rumble Studio 40 has been my main "go-to" since my loud modern country cover band, which required my Rumble 500 combo, broke up some years ago! At one jam my Studio 40 held down the low notes for over two dozen simultaneous guitars, mandolins, fiddles, a dobro, a banjo, a harmonica and a dozen singers with the Master volume no more than half up! I've also jammed the Studio 40 with a mature (not loud) drummer and 3 electric, and 2 acoustic, guitarists and 4-5 singers!! I've found most of 7ender's power ratings to be very conservative, and that's especially true of my Rumble Studio 40. As is often said, "it punches well above its weight." 🤩
If I ever need the various modeling voices of the Studio in a louder venue I can connect it to my Rumble 500 combo for reinforcement! I've experimented at home with connecting the Left (Mono) FX Send of the Studio to the R500c Input to amplify the modeled tones and it works great! 🥳

Welcome to Rumbleland. I'm on my third Rumble. I had to sell both my 40 and 200 combos when I moved to France. Rumbles aren't dual voltage. I bought a Studio 40 when I got here and couldn't be happier.

I had a different question going the opposite direction (bass to guitar) and that was: which Studio 40 presets are the best for guitar? I got the following suggestions:

3-Filthy Bassman
14-Basic '59 Bass
34-Basic Bri-Watt
35-Basic Orangey Dirt
36-Basic 1970 Brit

Note also that the Studio 40 supports the Fender GTX-7 footswitch. This video shows it with the Mustang GTX guitar amp, but it works the same with the Studio 40 bass amp (you have to specify it via the Studio 40's config menu).

Hi G-Dog and LeMaartien, thanks for the warm welcome! Glad to be here! I’m still in the investigation stages and don’t have anything yet so need to wait until I can join the club. Ha ha! I will be straight on there though when I’m set up.

I taught myself guitar in the early 90s playing Metallica rhythm guitar, and never got beyond that. I rediscovered it again in 2005 which started an acquisition phase for the next 10 years or so, and I eventually got some lessons around 2015 which was quite the light bulb moment learning about the structure, scales and keys. I stumbled across the Joe Satriani pedal point exercises which the latter part of my guitar days revolved around tinkering with that but ended up falling out of love with it and had a full declutter and sold all my gear a few years ago. I’d always loved the idea of bass, and it had crossed my mind over the years but I never did anything about it. It’s recently I’ve been rediscovering my love of Led Zeppelin, and finally opening the door to lots of new music that it’s made me think that whatever shaky foundation I have might actually be better suited to bass after all, and something in me has been inspired and sees so many possibilities that I couldn’t seem to see with the guitar.

I did have the Helix LT for my guitar and I loved the concept of having everything there, and all the stock presets. I know, partly acknowledging how gear sales can come back to bite you! Having said that, whilst it did have bass options in it, I think it was mainly geared towards guitar so I’m not too distraught about it. I’d be more interested in having something that is designed specifically for bass, so stumbling across the Rumble modelling amps has been really interesting. And yes, I’ve been deep into the presets spreadsheets so thanks so much for gathering all this information together which is really helpful.

I first heard of the LT25 which seemed great, but it just feels like it wouldn’t be that long before it would be outgrown. Also, whilst it has less presets than the 40/800, I had thought they would at least be the same names/setups. Maybe they are largely the same with slightly different names, but it didn’t feel right to get accustomed to presets that you can’t actually use in other contexts. So that’s leaning me towards the studio 40, and for my means it probably would be more than enough. I just have that niggling feeling that I’d need something else if I did end up playing with others. The Studio 40 is about £450 in the UK, so not an insignificant amount, if something bigger was needed. G-Dog, you mentioned that you sometimes connected it to your Rumble 500, are there any links on here or the Wiki that shows how to do this? I’d be interested to see how that works, then that would potentially put my mind as rest that the Studio 40 would be ample and a good long term purchase. I do see that I would predominately use the stock presets as I never really got any user presets to sound any good. The 100 stock should be more than enough!!

Off the back of LeMaarien’s point about recommended presets, would anyone have suggestions for the best presets to use for Led Zeppelin songs? I love the smooth bass sound of a lot of songs, but notice the sound on Heartbreaker for example has a more gritty sound. I did see there was a preset called Heartbreaker (and a HB2?) so that could be that one!

The other niggle I had was around the reliability of the software driven unit requiring updates and the like. How have you found the reliability and any have there been issues with the software/updates? I’ve seen stories of people have to get replacements for ongoing issues. I saw a post relating to the WiFi update issue for the Stage 800 which I saw is “fixed” if WiFi is only enables when updating, but I thought I saw them saw that they still had the issue.

Thanks in advance!

First, software updates. The Studio 40 firmware (and I presume the Stage 800 as well) has been very stable. There hasn't been an update in about 3 years.

Second, note that the Fender Tone app for Android (and I presume the iPhone as well) defaults to the Mustang GTX guitar presets until it connects to the Rumble the first time. Then you'll see the Rumble bass presets.

Third, the issue with the WiFi is well-documented. Use it ONLY for firmware updates. If you don't disable it after checking for an update (none for me in 3 years), you will get an occasional audio dropout. Fender documented this, but it's not obvious. This caught me out when I first got my Studio 40. The Fender Tone app will connect via Bluetooth so it's not a problem having WiFi disabled.

EXTRA: There are a bunch of Rumble v3 presets that will give you the 4 band EQ controls. Since most bass amps only have a MID control and not LO MID and HI MID, I'll give Fender a pass for only have 3 physical EQ knobs on the Studio 40, where my old 40 and 200 combos had 4. My GR BASS AT Cube 500 has 4, plus switchable crossover frequencies (3 each) for the Low Mid and High Mid controls. :bassist:

Hmmm, I don't know for sure, but maybe the LT25's USB port could connect to a PA mixer so equipped and give you the other contexts with it. And if the Studio 40 seems costly, then I guess the Stage 800 is out of the question.

Yeah, #55, Heartbreaker and #89, Heartbreaker Too, should be your first stops for Led Zep tones. And don't for a moment think they are the same sound; they're not! Others are up to your own aural sensibilities as to their suitability to whatever context. But don't discount the editing of stock presets that start out close to what you're looking for; they can be tweaked and saved for future reference!

Personally, I've had great reliability of the hardware and software from both my Rumbles and from my 17-year-old B-DEC 30 1st generation Fender bass modeling amp with a completely different, no longer supported, software system! You might peruse the anecdotes in the V3 Rumble Reliability Data thread for more (mostly great!) experiences and manufacturer's support!
The WiFi interference of the Stage & Studio is known, but not by everyone. We still occasionally hear from some who haven't heard of it. Also, the inherent shortcomings of Bluetooth, like only one pairing at a time or short distances, is also known by only some fraction of users. But these are usually just education problems, in most cases, instead of product problems. But, if identified under warranty, 7ender has great support, usually by replacement instead of repairs.
Alas, these are, ultimately, consumer electronics items and they will eventually be replaced with newer, better models as their manufacturer's support ends. However, contrary to the belief of some, that doesn't make them instantly obsolete and useless! As long as they still function, like my old B-DEC still does, then they are still perfectly useful!
Good luck, g!

Thanks LeMaartien for your thoughts the stability, and I would just need to keep in mind the WiFi known issue. Good to know too about the 4 EQ on the Fender Tone App.

Thanks for you thoughts on this. Regards studio 40 cost which I'm comfortable with, I was only meaning it's a fair amount if you then also have to get something else that is bigger on top of that so could be adding another £750-£1000. The price of the stage 800 isn't entirely out of the question, just wondering if it's completely out of hand for my needs for 95% of the time. I did see some people saying that it's still fine for home practice. I guess as I've never gigged before and I'm underestimating the gear you need.

I saw another post related to this somewhere else, and interested to hear your thoughts. Option 1: be "sensible" and get the Studio 40 that is perfect for the home use, playing with others, small gigs, and at some point add something like Rumble 500 to get a boost for bigger gigs. Option 2: "just go big" and get the Stage 800 as it can be used for everything and you wouldn't need to upgrade later.

Whilst option 2 is a bigger commitment up front, is it ultimately a better/cheaper option in the long run?

Yeah, #55, Heartbreaker and #89, Heartbreaker Too, should be your first stops for Led Zep tones

Thanks. I have heard them on the links posted on the Wiki for the two YT presets demo videos so would be cool to get to hear them in person.

Sorry, in the reading and the writing, I forgot to check that out. Thanks for that which is really helpful. I needed to read it a couple of times to understand it fully, but think I get it now so definitely reassuring to know the Studio 40 can be used for larger settings if needed.

Thanks again for all of this. It's been really helpful as it's a minefield of information that is largerly dominated salesfolk!

Good to know too about the 4 EQ on the Fender Tone App.
Just to be clear, the 4 EQ controls are part of the Rumble v3 presets and can be modified either via the tone app or via the proper controls on the top of the Studio 40. This preset only has a 3-band EQ, but the "how to" is the same. Press the "1" button until the desired EQ control is selected, and then adjust it with the "2" knob. Very cumbersome compared to the Fender Tone app, but if you don't have your phone or tablet for some reason, you still have the ability to dial in the EQ for a new room. Note that with Studio 40 and Stage 800 have 100 presets plus 100 spare slots (101-200) for user presets. If you need to adjust the EQ for your practice room, you can save the adjusted preset into one of the user slots so you don't need to readjust every time you power back up.

I ordered my Studio 40 yesterday so should be here this week which is pretty exciting! :bassist:🔊

I'll say hi on the Rumble Club page when it arrives and I'm an official owner!!

I had a different question going the opposite direction (bass to guitar) and that was: which Studio 40 presets are the best for guitar? I got the following suggestions:

Similar to LeMaartien's post, I've had another look through the WiKi page and apologies if this is there and I can't see it, but in addition to the decoder and stock preset spreadsheets, is there a spreadsheet that has a master list of suggested stock presets for styles/bands/songs/etc. If this is a new thing, could this be added to the WiKi page? Would it be possible to have shared access so anyone could jump on and add things? Not sure if it works like that, but just wondered if it would work.
