Fender Strikes Again

I bought one of the first run Player Plus Precisions in Cosmic Jade. As soon as I saw the color, had to have it. Played it for awhile as it came from the factory but it had a little buzz, so before Thanksgiving I dropped it off at Corner Music up in Nashville for Jeff to work his magic. I live just outside of Huntsville, AL so it's almost two hours to Nashville, but Jeff's work is worth it. A couple weeks after I drop it off Jeff calls. Bad news. The neck has a significant rise at the heel that he's not certain he can fix. Maybe Fender can warranty the neck?

So I contact Fender customer service and although I'm two months past the two year warranty they agree to work with me. BUT, I've got to take it to an AUTHORIZED Fender repair shop for THEM to check it out. Nearest is in Muscle Shoals an hour and a half away. So, I get the bass from Nashville, drive it over to Muscle Shoals. They agree, the neck is jacked and they will contact Fender. A couple weeks pass and Fender agrees to send a replacement neck but it'll be 90-120 days before they can. Sheesh. Yesterday the shop in Muscle Shoals calls. Fender sent a neck and it doesn't fit. They contacted Fender again, yup it's the right neck so the body must be out of spec. Fender offers a replacement, but the Cosmic Jade is discontinued. I can get another color, or another bass of same value. Ugh.

I unenthusiastically asked for one in Fiesta Red. 99% certain I'm going to sell it as soon as I get it and try to find another in Cosmic Jade but am worried about the quality crap shoot. Frustrated.

Quite an unfortunate saga. No excuse. Thirty lashes Fender!

I think we all want to see pics of this non-70s Fender Body having excess room for a Fender Replacement Neck to fit into.

My last run-in with a Fender Authorized Tech wasn’t very reassuring of the idea of them being able to do much more than change strings, adjust intonation & relief.

I’d be inclined to say to the tech that I’ll take my body, the new neck, the old neck, and let someone else (me) assemble it.

Hi Josh :)

Ski jumps can happen to all one piece bolt on necks! :( (even those with a fretboard)

Fender agrees to send a replacement neck

Fender offers a replacement

Fender strikes again! I give them that!

They could have said "Sorry but no, your warranty has run out".

Instead they give you a new bass after two years and two months!

That's actually very cool! :)

I'm sorry you had to deal with all that. It's cool that Fender serviced the bass beyond the two year warranty period, but that's the least they could do to make up for the simple and serious flaws they shipped that bass with. That two month warranty extension they offered represents about 0.23% of the time the p bass has been in production. You'd think they'd have the kinks worked out by now!

Sorry to read about your struggles with Fender. Were you unable to return it for a refund? I'm assuming you tried that too, but it wasn't mentioned so had to ask...

As posted earlier, mine is perfectly fine. I DID have to fix some fret sprout but otherwise no issues whatsoever and it's a decent workingman's instrument. I will agree though that my CIC, CII, CIK Squires are probably equal or close in quality.

Is your opinion based on actual hands on experience or ???
Going to shops for years.. playing them.. buy them.. setting them up..
My cousins old Mexican pbsss has a stripped nut.. when I play a Mexican bass I check the relief.. the feel.. and dead spots.. the Mexican series I liked the most was the pawnshop.. The roadworn were Nice.. but you have to watch the gain on the neck.. a overly flamed neck tends to banana.. I Thomasik Infelt jazz flats.. which baby most bassist.. but the reason why I think a ton of Mexican basses are a mess is the price verse the qc of all the basses I've played.. Just to be honest I have a crap load ok korean P basses.. and for the price to quality even back in the 90's they were even nicer back then..

Bummer! At least the Fiesta Red finish is much better in person than it looks in photos (red is not an easy color to photograph), so the audience won't mind it as a placeholder.

It's funny, I had to reverse-shim my Mustang PJ when I bought it new (in 2020) due to the neck pocket causing the strings to not bottom out, but TOP out. I ended up modding it a few ways, including a bridge with more tolerance, so it's a comfy player now.

However, the 50s Classic P I picked up new in I think 2015 has been the most maintenance-free instrument I've ever owned, and I've traded thru a few things. It needed literally just a couple of small setup adjustments out of the box and has absolutely ripped since. 2nd place goes to my bought-pre-owned '04 Lākland Skyline Deluxe, which only requires more maintenance because it has a battery heh.

Where Fender's concerned, I just can't predict it. And I don't understand how in a CNC machine process an instrument can come out with actual problems of manufacture. Like, are there no presets? Can one not plop a hunk of wood into the cutter and get a consistent set of cuts? Maybe I give too much credit to what I thought was a revolutionary technology.

Ok so it seems there’s an issue at the heel of the neck, causing a ski-jump?

I struggle to understand how a neck pocket that is too wide would cause such problem?

My #1 bass is a Warmoth/Fender hybrid. Warmoth body, Fender Am Perf neck. The neck pocket is a tad too wide (or the neck a tad too narrow), causing a very small gap, but the bass plays absolutely fine (and you wouldn’t notice the gap if you didn’t know).

Should this thread be stickied?

“Fender Precision Bass Player Plus” model bodies are not compatible with off the shelf necks from Allparts, Warmoth, or Fender and their necks are not compatible with any other Fender bodies, which may not matter as at least one at two years old needed to be defretted and leveled and defretted to return to playability.
I wonder if this is like the Ultra Jazz (I think)
That has the G string falling off the neck/fretboard because the bridge was too wide. I don't know if they ever fixed that. You could see it in photos in ads for them at the time. I think it was the Ultras?

:)

You have to heat the neck. back bow the neck.. then straighten it.. drill two pilots holes in put 12in screws in the neck to reinforce the neck..
