Replacing the power cord should be easy enough. Mine has original fixed power cord in place (it's very clean) & unless it gets wonky, I ain't touching it:)

rodl2005 - I will take a pic of the manual pages if you can do it without a ton of hassle. Be interesting to read what Fender says about the settings and such.

The power tubes are in arranged in 2 triplets. They sound great, as do the preamp tubes, so I am not going to mess with them right now. The amp is very quiet.

I have a friend who is a solid tech and he is going to replace the power cord and inspect the caps for me. If the caps look ok, I'll leave them too, but if this amp dates from the late 70's, I don't know if the caps would still be in the best shape.
We'll see.

The Studio Bass sounds (and looks) very good to me right now. The only "fixes' I want to make are to address the obvious stuff.

To the best of my knowledge, the Studio Bass has two input jacks, but only one real channel, so you can't jumper the two like you can with 2 channel amps like the older Bassmans or ampegs.

The way rodl2005 is explaining it, with his Studio Bass, he uses the footswitchable EQ section to get a second tone setting (using EQ). It is a very useful feature, which is similar to what some of the Mesa MPulse amps had described as a "Solo" channel, where you can lift the volume and have a different EQ curve, so your soloing can stand out better. But the Studio Bass is not a 2 channel amp. Just a single channel with 2 inputs.

Yes. Same amp. Super Twin & Studio Bass. Only Super Twin has a "distortion" control. Apparently useless from what I've heard, but I've not tried it.
Oh & the Super Twin came in a 212 combo, Studio Bass in a 115 combo.
Are the active eq points the same? Any other differences?

There was some discussion about how to use the Line/Recording output jack on the Studio Bass amp. Basically what I got from the original exchange by rodl2005 was that you needed a DI to use on the output to go into a PA, and that somehow, you would get both the pre and power amp output via this jack.

So, what is going on with this output of the amp ? What is the best way to use this output for either FOH/PA or recording. Can one of the more technical folks here offer some insight to a non EE owner of a Studio Bass amp ?

I noticed while poking through the various web sites with Studio Bass/Super Twin content that there are 2 distinct face plates. One has the amp name in Fender script on the right side, the other has the amp name in Block Letters below the 2 inputs.

I wonder if this is a way to distinguish the 2 versions of the amp. There are two different schematics that show different part numbers for the transformers, as well as two different power ratings .. 180w bass amp, and 200w bass amp.

interesting stuff.

FWIW, for anyone who wants the original Studio Bass amp user manual and schematic (dated 1978), the Fender archive service will send you a pdf copy free of charge. I just got mine, a day after I sent my request.

the manual does not say much that is useful, but it is still interesting to have none the less. The back pages have some accessories and some 70's marketing blurbs about Jazz, Precision and Mustang basses too.
