why do people here bash this guy all the time? a lot of kids out there think he's cool and they want to do the same thing as him.
when someone starts a thread about jaco's suckyness it gets closed immediatley (not because it's policy here, but because some people feel offended).

i think your just jealous that fieldy made millions and you didn't.

Ok, so he has an instructional video....that's a little whack and pretty hysterical, however, I think people, especially bass players, are really missing what he's trying to do artistically, and I think he is fully aware of the sound he gets.

First of all, Korn was not only genre defying, but one of the most innovative metal bands that has ever existed. Fieldy was first a guitar player, but switched to bass after he saw the percussive effect of slapping at a chili's concert. He then creatively used this technique in a way that hadn't been done before in a musical context of groove meets screaming and rocking out meets hip-hop, driven by extremely painful lyrics sung by a messed up dude with an obvious passion for what he's saying. I have been a korn fan since the bands inception, but sort of fell of by their last few albums and the band started to fall apart. However, I think the sound Korn achieved was not only innovative and fresh, but it deserves far more respect than it's given and I think Fieldy is due a lot of that respect as well.

I'm not trying to say Fieldy is Victor Wooten here, and if I woke up one day and my '69 P-bass made that sound I would light it on fire. I'm trying to say I don't think Fieldy sucks and sometimes I even envy him for having figured out the sound he hears in his head.

But let me step in.

Fieldy adds to Korn's music what is needed.
It wouldn't be cool without Fieldy's slap.
And Korn has a wide fanbase, among them most fans appreciate Fieldy's work.
So he must be doing his job right.

He also succeeds in making the bass audioble. :p

That slap tone is a slap tone suited for this kind of thrash metal. (nu metal? whatever subgenre Korn is.)
I have no problem with the tone.
And he has nice rythm.

Yes I realize he is more of a percussionist.
But it works.

Korn wouldn't be Korn with a traditional bass.


Just playing devil's advocate here. ;)
I'm no Fieldy fan and I don't wish to have his "skills".

But the same way I look at a famous guitarist, the same way I look at Fieldy.
Appreciate it, but another kind of musician than me.

I used to be a Korn fan. Hey, it was 12 years ago and I was 14... till the age of 17. :)
(With "used to be" I mean I don't like the stuff they brought out after Freak on a Leash.)

Let me try to be clear: I don't bash this kid because of the way he plays bass: More power to him. There can't be enough bass players playing enough different kinds of music.

I bash on him because he, and Korn as a whole, loudly and proudly wave the flag of intense substance abuse and fast-burn lifestyles that the kids who worship them will hurt themselves emulating. I bash on him because he makes incompetence look cool to kids who won't understand why they can't get work as musicians playing like him. And finally: sure I'm a little jealous of Fieldy's success. Any of us making a millifraction of his musical paycheck while taking music far more seriously than him would be lying to say otherwise. (And before you crack your knuckles getting ready to hammertype that enlightening essay on how Fieldy's 'music' is just as legit as Jaco's, lemme save you the trouble. I've read it before. I call bullspit.

Jealous of his success? Sure. Would I want his life? No. Not even if his money came with it. I expect to be here for my kids and grandkids 'til around 80 or so... about forty more years than Fieldy.

I wonder why he has never came out with a pedal that emulated his tone???? he would be richest man in world within 4 days!


No matter how much hate is in this thread, or how little does fieldy know about music (btw i highly doubt the ppl whos this DVD is orientated know notes by any other names than "Fret X String Y") the thruth is that korn back in the day had an awsome sound, unlike almost every band of nu metal nowadays, and were simply amazing i loved the click sound because it shined on the mix, unlike almost every bass player in nu metal nowadays whos BARELY NOTICIABLE, and if im actually a bassist its because fieldy showed me that bass was something powerful even in the gengre where it is the most underrated instrument.


BTW talking about drugs if we were to hate everyone on the music business because of that we should be forced to hate everyone but Zappa...

Personally, I really don't mind him, at least he has a unique style and got a lot of kids to pick up the bass. Cool to see that he knows more about theory than some people I play with who're also completely self-taught.

Actually, i know that i started this, but i thought it was a pretty cool rhythmic thing. I saw Korn in 2003 just by chance and it was a great show. I may not be a fanboy of them, but i will give them props. They are a great live band.
