I love fret rattle. It's one of the main rudiments of any great riff. Doing it at high volume with the right facial hair sculpting appears to be the basis of a successful career.

Obviously, bashing Fieldy as a player is pretty easy. The whole - more power to him mentality is just weak. The guys is extremely wealthy as a result of winning a form of musical lottery. It's not just Fieldy - I feel exactly the same about Adam Clayton :) He'd have to be drugged up to the eyeballs to seriously think he has the chops or educational ability to offer something of benefit to other musicians.

But then again, I guess some of you would say - More power to him. He can't be blamed for what people are willing to buy.

Ok, so he has an instructional video....that's a little whack and pretty hysterical, however, I think people, especially bass players, are really missing what he's trying to do artistically, and I think he is fully aware of the sound he gets.

First of all, Korn was not only genre defying, but one of the most innovative metal bands that has ever existed. Fieldy was first a guitar player, but switched to bass after he saw the percussive effect of slapping at a chili's concert. He then creatively used this technique in a way that hadn't been done before in a musical context of groove meets screaming and rocking out meets hip-hop, driven by extremely painful lyrics sung by a messed up dude with an obvious passion for what he's saying. I have been a korn fan since the bands inception, but sort of fell of by their last few albums and the band started to fall apart. However, I think the sound Korn achieved was not only innovative and fresh, but it deserves far more respect than it's given and I think Fieldy is due a lot of that respect as well.

I'm not trying to say Fieldy is Victor Wooten here, and if I woke up one day and my '69 P-bass made that sound I would light it on fire. I'm trying to say I don't think Fieldy sucks and sometimes I even envy him for having figured out the sound he hears in his head.

I like Korn, have seen them in concert and they blew me away. So much energy and feeling, the crowd was going crazy. This isn't progressive rock where they play every scale backwards and forwards in technical fashion. You may call this groove metal; Helmet, Rage, etc. Fieldy has his sound and you know it when you hear it, not every musician can say that. I like what he's done, but I would not want to sound like him.

Well, I'm not quite as enthusiastic as 'ole Chronos, but I have to ditto the guys who say cut Fieldy some slack. I think Flea is a much better player, but if you watch his video, the majority of the talking is some kinda mamby pamby double speak hippie talk that is mostly incoherent. But that doesn't take away from his skills. He is not an orator, he is a bass player. Same with Fieldy. the best thing about Korn, is that when you hear their music, you KNOW it's Korn. Immediately. They have managed to find a sound that is original and totally different from a lot of the other music out there. And they definitely wouldn't be Korn without his rattling guttural bass chunking.

The thing is, "his sound" is something anyone can emulate, but it's something that most of us try to avoid. 99% of players of any instrument try to avoid sounding like mush and try get usable tones with note definition. It's nice whenever a musician can get a following while deliberately going for a rumbling mushy tone all of the time; all the power to him! I mean, there are popular guitar players who do almost the same thing, where there is no chord definition and almost total white noise. It's like, why bother even flailing around on the fretboard pretending to be dexterous or even tuning your strings, when no matter where you are fretting and strumming it all just sounds like overamplified static from a TV channel that gets no broadcast signal?

He does have good sound he is most of the band.

Drop tune your bass FIVE steps, sling your bass down to your ankles, and play hammer-ons, and thump the B string the whole time. After all, it doesn't really matter what notes you
play, just as long as the song GROOOOVES! :eyebrow:

Dude, if your taking Fieldy for your musical inspiration, 30 yrs from now you will just be learning "Under The Boardwalk"
or "Black Magic Woman". Heck by that time, you might even forget standard tuning! :rolleyes: :scowl:

The part that really hurts me is that bands like Korn offer nothing. They represent a lowering of the bar, unmusical tones, growling angry vocals, and no redeeming social value. They put the same album out what like four times? Who can say there life was improved because of this band.

I started playing music because of bands like Metallica, Madien, and many others. Those bands had SOME musicianship happening. I also listened to Minor Threat, they were kids, with little technical ability, but a real message. I still listen to Fugazi on a regular basis, they are a heavy band with musicianship, songwriting chops, and a real message.

When I eat a lot of it I see Korn in my poop.

I understand that this is a musician's forum, where we tend to be overly technical and or/critical about what other musicians play, etc. so I understand the Fieldy/Korn bashing to some extent.

With that being said, some of you cats are taking yourself way too seriously.

How many of you guys that are saying that Fieldy is the biggest piece of garbage to ever touch the instrument play in cover bands?

And what percentage of that has played some Van Halen? Running with the Devil?

Not the most difficult piece of music there is it? How many times have you been booed onstage for playing it? I doubt ever.

Some people (shocking I know) actually like simpler music, and sometimes the music calls for a simpler bass part.

In the case of Korn, they had 2 guys playing 7 sting guitars in the band. Exactly how would Fieldy cut through the mix & be heard if he didn't deviate from what's normal "metal bass"?

Or is that more acceptable to us here at talkbass? Double the guitar line like 98% of metal bassists, and ever though no one in the planet knows what he's playing (except himself) because they can't hear him, at least he's not doing the clickity-clack slap line...WE MIGHT ACTUALLY HEAR HIM THEN!
