Fieldy has a Instructional DVD....

I've made this statement before, but it bears repeating. In my mind, it isn't just that guys like Pete Wentz or Fieldy are bad players, it's the fact that either they don't care that they are bad players (Wentz) or they have an unwarranted ego about their playing (Fieldy).

Two players I always really liked, Paul Simonon (Clash) and Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads) couldn't even play their instruments when they joined the band. But obviously each of them took learning the bass seriously as they evolved into very solid players. I think that's part of why guys like Wentz and Fieldy get slagged by other bassplayers. They show no dedication for their craft. The annoying non-musician view that the bass is a simple instrument is only reinforced by these types of players, which also leads to some frustration I imagine.

Korn has obviously been successful and Fieldy's bass playing has contributd to that success. But watching the previews for Munky and Fieldy I can't help but think that players that appear to know no theory and constantly refer to fret positions rather than notes probably shouldn't be doing instructional videos.

I'm not ashamed to admit I still like fieldy as a bassist. I think that when you start listening to heavier rock in early teens, you get used to the bass rather fading into the background...and strange as it may seem it was korn that actually had me listening to the rhythm section. He's got quite a competent slap technique - yes there are far better by miles, I'm a huge fan of Jonas Hellborg and his earlier stuff was manic in the slap department, but he doesn't make any claims to be on par with any of the players folks compare him to.

And just wait til Pete Wentz gets an instructional DVD out...then I will happily laugh with the best of them :p

Not too sure about that judging from Fieldy's video, he keeps on referring to octaves and sevenths so he has to have a certain grasp of theory (my band's guitar players are completely self-taught and if I start talking about intervals I get blank stares). Also I'm pretty sure that if the players kept on using lots of music theory lingo, that line of instructional videos would lose its broad appeal and wouldn't be as marketable.

Good points, and agreed.

I'm comfortable enough in my own playing that I don't have to resort to bashing a multi-millionaire doing what he loves just to make me feel better. Hehe :smug:

face it, the guy doesent know the notes up and down the neck (some might argue that he does and just said the fret numbers to "dumb it down" for his audience, wich implies his audience is dumb?)

if someone like claypool, who i'm not exactly in love with, played in korn it would sound better. even if it was a jazz bass/SVT sound, it would sound better. its one thing to play precussively on a bass, (holla at your boy victor wooten?) but to smack the strings precussively without articulating any note and/or bottom end, is more like playing a tamborine than it is like playing a bass. granted that rhythm might be usefull to the music, its still terrible playing.

now if in his instructional video we saw some well-rounded playing of all styles, funk, rock, blues, jazz, and then he concludes it with i CHOOSE to play like this, then i wouldent dare bash him. but being that "tamborine" seems to be all he is capable of, i think its fair grounds for bashing.

I don't know if he knows the notes on the board or not. I really like to see/hear what else he can do other than the Korn stuff. Perhaps that tone/style was originally the idea of a producer - I don't know.

Having said that, if what we see and hear is all he's got, the dude needs to hit the woodshed.

Let me see if he's done any solo work.....

As far as rap goes, that's the most UNORIGINAL piece of garbage ever! Come on, like I said these guys offer no quality.

As for the question what do I think is good or quality. I mentioned some heavy bands I fell are good. I think lyrics that are trying to tell a real story or convey a real message.

Korn: "I hurt and I'm mad!"

Feildly's solo project: "I Smoke weed!"

I was wrong when I quoted Barnum, there isn't a sucker born every minute. It's more like every second!
