Their dribbling and passing in traffic is really fun to watch! This France match feels like watching a cat bat a mouse around.
And then it's just fun. It's all fun and games until a goalie chips a tooth on an opponent's athletic protector.
And Lukaku is a wild card for Belgium. .The Belgium of the first 80 minutes, most definitely. If Belgium play like they did to close out the rest of that match, then it will be tough for the US. Belgium’s keeper and wings are considerably better than Bosnia’s.
Croatia had a couple of bad breaks in their loss to Portugal. I thought they heavily outplayed Ronaldo & Co but they had two goals nullified after being deemed offside, including one near the end of stoppage time. Tough loss.
I don't know whether the ref let the clock run too long or not, since I didn't see this match, but keep in mind that in this WC there is a minimum of 3 minutes of stoppage time added to every half because of the so-called "hydration breaks." (Grrrrrrr.... don't get me started on that.) Ordinarily 10 minutes of stoppage time would be considered "pretty exceptional," but not under this (ridiculous) rule.It didn't need to be that tough for them, or their fans.
There were supposed to be 10 minutes of stoppage time, which by itself is pretty exceptional.
If the ref had stopped the match on time, or even stretched it out to 11 minutes, this would have all been avoided. But for some reason he let it overrun by an additional 4 minutes (17 in total), and the fact that the sequence of events, and the VAR angles were so inconclusive - the match was settled by a blip on a sensor inside the ball.
Sure, loosing 2-1 was going to be a disappointment, but this was an unnecessary torture that made a loss feel like a robbery, and left a bad taste in the mouth.
10 minutes showed as added time. That's fine, I'm sure that was based on actual stoppage. But the late score was in the 13th minute of stoppage time. My guess is a couple minutes we're added due to Portugal score celebration during stoppage time. But it probably could have stopped at the 12 minute mark.I don't know whether the ref let the clock run too long or not, since I didn't see this match, but keep in mind that in this WC there is a minimum of 3 minutes of stoppage time added to every half because of the so-called "hydration breaks." VAR review of scoring is a good idea to correct any obvious reffing mistakes, but it should only be done at full speed as a ref would normally see the play. Also the toenail offside calls pssible through the video tech runs counter to the spirit of the rule, IMO.As a fan who already hates VAR, to see it now overruled to another level of detail by microchips is unsettling and not where I’d like the game to be going.
I'm not sure if I agree that the VAR officials should be required to only watch replays at full speed, but I certainly agree that if they only reverse a call after watching the replay five times in super-slow motion they are not merely correcting "obvious errors" as per the spirit of the rules.VAR review of scoring is a good idea to correct any obvious reffing mistakes, but it should only be done at full speed as a ref would normally see the play.
