Finally, another build thread...

I've been working here and there for the last few weeks but haven't had a lot of time to photograph. So here's an update of where the whole thing is at. The fingerboard still isn't glued on yet, nor is the neck glued in to the pocket.

I'm really liking this one. You gonna fill those holes?

Yup, but that's something of a surprise so you'll have to wait and see.

amazing shape, top, and fb wood. btw, wierd you get that sweet bloodwood?

It's actually not bloodwood, but rather cocobolo. The pics make it look really red and the fb itself has a good red tint to it. I do have a bunch of bloodwood planks (3"x13/16"x5') for fingerboards but it doesn't have that high grain definition of the cocobolo.

Looking great Paul, gives me a little more inspiration for the maple burl topped scroll I'm starting this week!

Nice: I've got a maple burl top as well (for the next one) and can't decide if I'm going to use another of my body designs or this one again...it's turning out better than I expected :).

Thanks for the kind words guys.

The end of this build is rapidly approaching, and I'm getting pretty stoked on the idea of playing this guy. Of course, I'm also looking forward to starting the next build as well...

I've filled almost all the holes and such:

The holes for the control knobs are drilled and the control cavity is routed out:

The frets are almost done and the fret dot markers are done:

I decided to use PU glue again, this time to glue the neck to the body:

what did you use to fill the holes? i love the look of it.

i agree. will the filler keep that funky blue-green color, or match? i hope they keep the sweet color. it has good contrast. i love this build

Me too, great work Paul !!! I can tell by the pics that you are a very organized person. Keep it up, I cant wait to see more progress. Peace

Thanks for the kind words guys :).

The filler is crushed turquoise. I got the idea from Greg Savage who used to post here (I forget under what name). He makes burl wood jewelry and fills holes and occlusions with turquoise. It should keep its color: the test pieces had no noticeable change in color after finishing, and the headstock has a first layer of finish with no change...I'll confirm that in about a week.

I can't dig the shape hard as I try - the whole scrolly thing on a big horn just has always rubbed me the wrong way, but the woods and the craftsmanship on this one are looking really really amazing. :) Nice work!

I can respect that: I'm not super big on the more intricate scrolls myself (especially the kind that end up looking like a double bass scroll). I like this one because it's more of a teardrop. I'm still working on other designs, but am trying not to get too hung up on being original: just trying to make some that I'd like.
