Finally, another build thread...

the turq is my favorate part, then the top, and the fingerboard as close seconds. can you make a tutorial of your filling method. i want to sandblast some ash to deepen the grain, and then fill it in with something like this.

Hey Jordan,

Here's the link to the tutorial:

The first coat of finish will be going on tonight or tomorrow, and I'll get pics up ASAP.

Okay, I've finally taken the time to take and post some new pics. The last few weeks weren't very eventful: lots of contouring, sanding, sanding, control cavity cover, sanding, etc.

Tonight I hit it with 400 grit and said what the heck...time to put a coat on. Cleaned it up with compressed air, naptha, and more compressed air to remove dust, created a small jig that's basically a 2"x2" plank with two 1/2" dowel rods sunk into it which are spaced to fit into the pup cavities and hold the bass while upside-down.

Here's a few pics of the bass before the first layer went on:

ok. how similar will that turn out as far as gloss compared to a clear coat lacquer? hand-rubbed, correct? excellent work too, that bass is beautiful.

Actually, this is the satin version so there won't be any of the high shine you'd get from the gloss version, let alone build up lacquer. It's supposed to be made for multiple coats with mesh or 400+ grit scouring between coats especially to remove any wipe or brush marks. I'm going to try some wet sanding using it and 600 on an off-cut to see how well it can be worked before getting too tacky. Follow that with a wipe down, a day to dry, then another dry wipe down followed by (hopefully) the final coat.

How do you like the finish? Is it getting hard? I had some trouble with a spray lacquer that I got at Lowes-it stayed soft for months!

edit: Where do you buy this stuff?

You know, with the first coat it is noticeably more dense. It's not going to offer the protection of the thick layers that other finishes offer, but it's definitely firming up much more than just Danish Oil. It feels a bit like TruOil as it goes on, but a bit less...oh, I don't know: greasy? I know that TruOil works magic in some folks eyes, but it never really agreed with me. It's rainy here right now, and it still dries somewhat promptly. It's still releasing a bit of smell (VOC's?), but the surface is done to the point where I've been able to start scouring with synthetic (nylon) 0000 pads to remove any debris that decided to land on it while wet. I'll post again after the next coats to give a little more feedback.

I picked it up at Woodcraft:
