Finally, another build thread...

(chants) More pics! More pics! More pics! More Pics!!!!!!:bassist:

:D
Yeah, yeah: I'm sanding down some of the varnish to take out some rub marks this evening and then will put the (hopefully) last thinned coat on tonight. I just picked up some wax for polishing (Mylands) today, so if it's nice and dry tomorrow I'll buff out the finish a bit.

Holy hell, man. I am pretty blown away by your talent and this bass (in the making). Freakin' beautiful!

Thanks for that: I'm trying to dedicate a little more time to it, but my wife and 9 month old have something to say about it too :).

:hmm:I'm nearing the end of my process of redoing a SX 5 string jazz. I sanded the body down, added a walnut burl veneer top, burl walnut control cover, audere 4 band, barts. It's my first attempt at a partial bass build . I wish I had the tools/machines to get the routing/results but oh well.
Now after seeing your bass I think I will use mine for firewood.

No way, man: my first attempt at changing the finish on a bass was my late 80's Squire p bass. I sanded off the finish, rasped out some new contours, and stained some lines and such. I had no power tools and no idea what I was doing. It's absolutely ugly, and I still have it to remind me that all the mistakes I make now aren't a big deal. Just keep working at it...I love my current build, but all I see is warts on it, and all the things I'll do differently next time :).

I know your right but knowing how you want it to look and the reality of this thing laying before me is kinda discouraging BUT alas I will press on. I'm going to try to post a pic and sound clip hopefully. I bet my pic will make your warts disappear!:D

just wondering why you didnt carve the neck to body joint back further. the bass looks nuts, but to me the neck joint seems a little chunky. is the neck really square towards the body? CT's original version of that bass was a bolt on not a set neck why didnt you do that?

Im not bashing your work in anyway man. that bass is sick looking. just wonderin.

Definitely valid questions. I needed to try out my chops at making a set neck, so I decided against the bolt-on during the design process. I left the pocket extension complete square until after the gluing process and adding contours. The idea was to get it to taper into the neck, though I wanted to maintain some of the wenge back plate curving onto that area. The neck itself is actually really thin where it meets the pocket's slope, so it's deceptive looking (makes the pocket area look super thick). Still, next time I will start my carving process differently, creating the body's shoulder contours first and carrying that contour through the pocket so there is a more gradual, continuous line.

Well, it's done. That is, aside from the few areas that need touching up and a bit of cleaning, plus I need to order some knobs. There's a small issue with the wiring, but the signal is strong and clear, with no buzz or hum at all. I'll get some pics up tomorrow...right now I need some sleep :).

Waiting.........:bassist::bassist:

I know, I know: I've got family visiting full-time at the moment, so it's hard to get anything done. That's why I stayed up so late the other night finishing the soldering :rolleyes:. I'll have to record some clips on Monday or Tuesday at work since I don't have any XLR cables here to run my AI Contra direct into the MBox2. I will get some pics going though, if the family leaves me to my devices for a few hours...
