Fireglo or Walnut Ric 4003, and why?

I wasn't shooting that high.

I was just thinking of what could EASILY be done by Rickenbacker, if they had the desire to.
As it is, realistically, they'd just probably look at the photo and tell him to go ____ himself.

Somewhere out there is a Rick one-off walnut 4003 with a shiny clearcoat finish. It is fabulous looking. To the OP,just be aware the walnuts oil finish can make the maple fretboard look dingey fairly quick. I love the feel of it on my Cheyenne 1,but not crazy about the "dirty" look.
Edit-and i really don't like the look of thr pearl fwi on a maple fretboard.

If money were no object, I'd have a 4001v63 with horseshoe & toaster, in midnight blue ( or a 4003S with those PUs ) and a 4004 Cheyenne in walnut. Yeah, I know I didn't answer the question, just giving my $0.02. Best of both worlds.

Since 4004 in walnut are hard to come by, if I couldn't find one, I'd do a 4003SW with the standard PUs.

If the walnut one had a dark-wood fretboard/neck....YES!!!

I'd buy that in a heart beat! That is by far the coolest. I voted walnut, but that's because it would be down to that or jetglo/midnight blue. Love me the body of walnut 4003's but not sold on the maple fretboard.

Fireglo: Rare. Instantly recognisable as a Ric. For me, Fireglo is the Ric colour. Looks beautiful.
"Yeah! A Ric, now we're talkin'!"

Walnut: Rarer. Just looks bloody beautiful, on it's own merits, before you clock that it's a Ric. "...and it's a Ric! Wow!"

Okay, if it were me, I'd get the fireglo. For one, really minor reason.

I don't really like maple fretboards. Dunno why, just don't. Never have.


If you don't share this same peculiarity of mine, you should get the walnut. There will be fireglo 4003s as long as Rickenbacker exists. The same may not be true of walnut ones.

Jetglo because it matches best with anything. Matches especially well with black.

I actually plan on having my jetglo 4003S refinished to white. Blends in with my black shirts too much.

The fact that it's named after Sir Robert Towns is no excuse, in fact it makes it worse.

Agreed, though my dress never fit in real well to the stoner rock and doom metal scene lol. But I'd feel crazy to refinish a bass like a ric (I love jetglo though). I mean a shirt costs $15 and 5 minutes of your time...A refinish costs money and or lots of time and it may not come out great. But too each their own. If you want to go for it.

if you want rare go Walnut...they haven't been making that since day 1.

Check out Montezuma Brown because it's somewhere between the two. It was a colour of the year in 2004, so limited run & much much rarer. I've got a Ric 330 guitar that colour and it looks divine.

Agreed. That why I don't have my 70's 4001 Fireglo Ric copy anymore.
