For the Fireglo, I meant rare in as much as Rics are rare. Rare by default.
I classed the Walnut as "rarer".
I hate white shirts. They get pit stains easy, they get all sorts of other stains easy, smudge them in the slightest and they're dirty. Ugh. Plus I don't look good in them.You could wear a white shirt! Be different and original in the doom metal world.
Lately I've been getting more grey shirts when the option is available. Or tan/brown. Two of my Neurosis shirts are grey, so is one of my SubRosa shirts, and my Sleep shirt is tan.
I like the look, anyway. Also, with who I'm going to have do the refin and his past work for me, I know it'll turn out well.
And, as mentioned, I don't like white shirts.

I feel ya, and completely agree about white shirts. I prefer grey or off colors as well. Are you planning on doing a custom color, or something similar to another ric? I'm real interested to see how it turns out, I haven't seen too many refin rics.
Similar to Snoglo, I suppose. Unless it has nice wood grain underneath. Then it will be transparent white.
MY choice is Fireglo. I hope YOU choose Walnut, because I would like people to stop copying me. Please? I want to be the only person in the world with a Fireglo Ric. What are my odds?
I only play sub-short scale bass and whenever I see a guitar that could be converted to one, I take notice. A few months ago I saw a reissue Ric 325 FireGlo short scale guitar at Guitar Center, the color is beautiful and so indicative of a Riceknbacker. I immediately thought of converting to a bass, but when I saw the $3000 price, that ended that idea.
A few weeks later I looked at a TB thread on walnut basses, which had a skunk stripe that I never knew about. I thought the two color looked great together. I had previously seen a solid body bass uke natural finish for $200 that I knew would make a good facsimile, so I ordered it and had it converted by Eric's Guitar here in Los Angeles. and stained by Pat Wilkins (though it's not walnut wood, just walnut stain).
Then a few weeks ago I was reading a thread about Chinese knock-off Ricks and did a search on AliExpress for a 325 and found a dealer who had it for $295 and also did customizing. I sent him a mock up of a 325 as a bass, and he said he can do it for the same price.
So now I don't have to decide on which color, I have both (as soon as the 325 arrives).

I wouldn't call Fireglo rare since it's been a standard color forever...
To answer the question, my first choice would be walnut S version. the lack of binding and black dots on the maple board just look "right"..I'm not a fan of the inlays on maple.

Actally, Paul my have started with FireGlo, then they all painted their instruments (AcidGlo?) then they all stripped them to bare wood thinking the sound was better. So maybe today he would go with Walnut?
Sorry, not MID, but this does have a real (magnetic) horseshoe pickup.

Where did you get the pickup Jeff? And does the pickup sound different than the non magnetic horseshoes?
I have the Walnut and just purchased a 79. I am truly mystified by the sound of this bass. I thought the legend surrounding it was over hyped. I was impressed however by putting low rider strings on it and being able to play in A dropped to G. The neck is perfect! I also put JBE pickups in it and they do perform well while retaining the "Ric" sound. I'm keeping the Walnut clean and in its case, I may trade it and buy from a small American company with less "clout".
Given the ongoing and current finish peeling problems, the Walnut with an oil finish is a safer bet, plus it's a little lighter.
I have seen the walnut in person and I must say it is Gorgeous!
I went with the Fireglo. I've had, and seen too many Walnut 4003's that had poorly finished Maple fretboards, and frets not dressed well at all.
